The Deadliest Catch Boats Come Equipped With Two Of Everything ... - Looper
Whether you're captain or a deckhand on one of the vessels featured on Discovery's "Deadliest Catch," it would seem that the primary concern throughout the working season would be whether or not there's enough crab caught to call the trip a financial success. However, the truth is, the possibility of so many other unforeseen factors could turn the trip not only unprofitable, but disastrous. That's why it's necessary for the brave captains of these boats to take all the necessary precautions to stay successful and safe.
When your crabbing vessel is working in the middle of the treacherous Bering Sea, the one thing that is more important than catching those elusive crustaceans is ensuring the boat isn't susceptible to major issues. With each piece of equipment having its own vital role, one malfunction or mishap may significantly derail a fishing season. If a crab pot crane breaks, nothing is left to help haul in the bounty. If a GPS system goes down, there's no way to track the location of the pot string, or even the boat itself. And if important equipment below deck goes down, the vessel can be a sitting duck, vulnerable to mother nature.
Sometimes a backup plan is as important as the actual game plan. Just like in sports, each position needs a backup so that the whole team won't collapse if one player can no longer compete. The same goes for these "Deadliest Catch" boats, as backup equipment is imperative for any fishing trip. Although this doubling of parts-plan will always be expensive, the investment may save not only the crew's financial season, but also their lives.
When you're catching crab on the Bering Sea, the vessels of "Deadliest Catch" are each their own individual island, floating amongst an endless landscape of rough waters. Many nautical miles from the nearest boat repair station, it is a necessity for these captains to make sure they have a second option for almost every piece of equipment on board, so that there will be no reason to trek back to shore or request Coast Guard help. When Keith Colburn gave Seattle Insider a tour of the Wizard, he detailed this necessary contingency plan.
As Colburn showed off the underbelly of the Wizard, he pointed out this important redundancy rule."Two generators...two steering pumps, two air compressors," he said before directing attention towards above deck. "Upstairs, two GPS's, two radios, two everything." Colburn went on to explain that this plan greatly eliminates the possibility of the crab catching process from significantly slowing down. "So, if this one [generator] goes down while we're fishing, we put this one back up online as quickly as we can," he continued.
Although just about every possible piece of equipment is covered, Colburn explains that there is one essential component that cannot be backed up, and must remain maintained as best as possible. "The only thing we don't have two of on the boat is the main engine," he said. "It's a single screw boat and if it goes down we're kind of in deep water." The equipment back up plan is a pricey investment for every boat. A pretty penny goes into most purchases, such as a backup crane/lift system costing around $75,000 (via BoatingBasicsOnline). But, when it comes to the crabbing season, these expenditures are not only smart, but necessary.

Applus Services S A : Ecodesign, a requirement for solid fuel heating appliances - Marketscreener.com
Did you know that solid fuel heating appliances with wood or pellets must comply with current Ecodesign regulations? Keep reading to understand what this implies and why it's beneficial to meeting sustainable goals.
For Europe, 2022 was a year with notable inflation. The current socio-economic situation produced supply shortages directly linked to our pockets. Despite measures put in place by European governments, the prices of essential resources such as electricity and natural gas increased, reaching peaks of up to £1585.82/MWhvi in the UK electricity market.
As a response to soaring prices, consumers decided to invest in solid fuel heating systems and appliances for their households. This rising trend continues to grow from last winter, when users began opting for cheaper materials for heat generation to reduce long-term costs. In fact, the demand for wood stoves in Europe has doubled this 2022 compared to previous years.
However, as solid fuel heating systems gain popularity, it's important to know that not all can be legally marked or installed. Starting from January 1, 2022 they'll have to comply with Ecodesign 2015/1185 and 2015/1189 Regulation.
Solid fuel heating
Solid fuel heating appliances burn wood (firewood, wood chips); agglomerated compounds (pellets, briquettes) or mineral coals (anthracite, coke, bituminous, lignite, hard coal, peat) as fuel. They are typically equipped with a water heating system to distribute the generated heat into several rooms.
Ecodesign is a concept that gathers all design requirements to ensure that products and services can improve their environmental performance throughout their life cycle. Its first appearance was in the 90s due to the growing need to mitigate environmental impact in manufacturing and the demand for environmentally friendly products. For solid fuel appliances Ecodesign applies to solid fuel appliances use for domestic use, such as wood and pellet stoves, inserts, stoves and domestic boilers up to 50 kW.
Ecodesign aims to use solid fuels to promote the sustainable and environmentally friendly use of biomass. All appliances that comply with this norm have to ensure efficient combustion and reduce all gas and particles emitted into the atmosphere, as much as possible.
From the consumer's point of view, Ecodesign is their only option, since son-compliant equipment can no longer enter the market. Since they require a greater R&D investment, the cost of these type of appliances have an additional added value and cost. But in the long-run they could bring about savings due to their performance, since they are more energy-efficient and consume less fuel.
Before Ecodesign regulation came into force, solid fuel appliance CE marking requirements for certification were very loosely defined. However, starting from January 1, 2022 new emission and performance parameters also entered into force due to regulation, requiring manufacturers to adapt their product catalog to the norm.
When it comes to adapting these appliances to Ecodesign, a major challenge is reducing carbon monoxide (CO) emissions. While CE marking sets the limit of 1.0% or 12,500 mg/m3, Ecodesign regulation sets it at 0.12% or 1,500 mg/m3 (values referenced to 13% of O2 for equipment with a closed door). Appliances also have to abide to additional requirements related to total organic carbon (TOC), nitrogen oxide (NOx) and particulate emissions.
Ecolabelling and Ecodesign go hand in hand. Complying with Ecodesign allows you to obtain ecolabelling. So, what is ecolabelling? As the name suggests, a label that provides energy consumption and other technical information about a product, in this case a heating appliance. This allows the consumer to easily compare characteristics before buying the product. As a mandatory requirement in the European market, all solid fuel heating appliances must include the informative label with their corresponding energy category.
Before ecolabelling, manufacturers put voluntary quality marks on their products. In France, the Flameberk scale subsidises appliance purchases depending on their category. Spain also wanted to implement something similar with the AECEC mark, but it hasn't been as relevant as the Flameberk scale.
Since January 1, 2022, ecolabelling is mandatory for this type of equipment, but many manufacturers are still adapting their product catalogs because it is not a simple process.
Acquiring proper testing results is a requirement for eco-labelling. Applus+ Laboratories offers testing services for CE marking compliance with Ecodesign and Ecolabeling Directive: performance, power and emissions tests, as well as safety tests on biomass equipment (stoves, fire extinguishers, fire extinguishers, etc.).

United and Chase Are Giving Away 1 Million Miles in an Epic ... - Travel + Leisure
Stacey Leasca is an award-winning journalist. Her photos, videos, and words have appeared in print or online for Travel + Leisure, Time, Los Angeles Times, Glamour, and many more. You'll usually find her in an airport. If you do see her there, please say hello.
Tuesday marks the very first National Lose the Jet Lag Day — a holiday we can absolutely get behind.
But we’re not the only ones honoring this momentous day, the United Family of Cards from Chase is celebrating too, by giving away 1 million United MileagePlus Miles to one lucky winner. All you need to do to enter is pledge to fight jet lag like a pro in 2023.
“....[T]he turn of the new year is the perfect time to commit to getting the most out of travel,” Laurinda Rainey, the general manager of United Co-Brand Cards at Chase, shared in a statement. “We are excited to launch this Sweepstakes on National Lose the Jet Lag Day to raise awareness of the impact jet lag has on travel.”
Courtesy of United Airlines
The team isn’t leaving you on your own to figure out how to beat jet lag. United and Chase are teaming up with Timeshifter, a high-tech app designed by world-renowned scientists and led by Dr. Steven W. Lockley, an associate professor at Harvard Medical School and Timeshifter’s chief scientist. Its mission is to help travelers understand jet lag and tackle its underlying cause.
As a spokesperson for Timeshifter explained in a statement, “jet lag causes significant human and financial costs – from poor concentration and reduced productivity to less enjoyment and weakened immune function. Timeshifter debunks common jet lag myths and replaces them with real science, allowing travelers to control circadian rhythms by taking small actions at specific times to ensure they arrive at their best.”
The app works by allowing users to input their travel plans and provides a detailed outline of when they should see light and when they shouldn’t, reminders to reset their watches, and when and if they should drink any caffeinated beverages, all to help the user rebalance to their new timezone quickly. And if you’re not sure it works, just look to Mike Massimino, a former NASA Astronaut, Timeshifter advisor, and avid user. “When I was an astronaut, we learned how to shift our circadian rhythms to prepare for rocket launches and spacewalks. Because our circadian clock regulates our sleep, alertness, and almost all other biological systems in our body, it was key to our safety, performance, and health,” Massimino shared. “It’s gratifying to see circadian science finally being applied outside of NASA to equip travelers to tackle jet lag.” Beyond the million miles, the winner will also receive a year-long subscription to the Timeshifter jet lag app, so they can make the most of all their upcoming trips. Eight other people will also receive the subscription, along with 500,000 United MileagePlus miles. And an additional 500 people who take the pledge will win a year-long subscription to the Timeshifter jet lag app. Ready to take the pledge and enter to win? Star Rods Helps Angler Land new North Carolina State Record - Fishing Tackle Retailer
Morehead City, North Carolina — Star Rods has now been used to break more than 250 world and state fishing records since the brand launched nearly 40 years ago. Nash County local Logan Ennis is the latest record breaker.
On Monday, January 2nd, Logan along with his son Jackson and a family friend were sea bass fishing along the Morehead City coast near Cape Lookout. Weather conditions were slightly overcast with fair temperatures as Logan and his companions spent the day telling jokes and doing what they love. Logan was reeling in what he thought would be another sea bass, but was surprised to find a white grunt attached to his squid baited hook. He describes how he didn’t expect to see a grunt on that particular day, as he was only thinking about how to catch a sea bass, a fish he was accustomed to finding on these trips. “It was the biggest grunt I’ve ever seen”, describes Logan.
Logan was using an extra heavy action Star Rod Aerial Jigging rod (EXJ66XH) with 150-pound braid on a Daiwa Saltist 35HG reel when he caught his sensational grunt. He tells us that “all [his] bottom fishing rods are Star Rods” and that he can best describe Star Rods as “quality products at quality prices.”

But, not knowing the quality of his fish was another story. Logan tells how he really didn’t even think twice about the fish, “de-hooking it and tossing it to the side.” Though he figured it was just another common grunt, Logan’s buddy sure didn’t, and encouraged him to take it for an official weigh in the next day at Chasin’ Tails in Atlantic Beach, NC. To Logan’s surprise, the kind folks at Chasin’ Tails let him know that he was on his way to the North Carolina state record.
The Star Rods family is immensely happy for Logan, and are even happier that his son, Jackson Ennis, was with him to experience this awesome event. Here at Star Rods and Calcutta Outdoors, one of our core values is to ensure that the next generation has access to fishing. We pride ourselves on sharing the knowledge of fishing as well as our love of the sport with our young anglers. “One of our main principles here at Star is to engage the next generation in fishing. It’s a great thing to see them enjoy fishing together as much as I do with my sons. That’s why we were excited to send Jackson a new Star Rod. We hope you will use it alongside your dad with pride”, says Chris Pardue, Sr. Brand and Category Manager for Calcutta Outdoors and Star Rods.
Logan’s white grunt weighed four pounds and 13.6 ounces, a total of 5.6 ounces heavier than the current state record, which was caught off Cape Lookout in 1969. Logan describes how if he had not waited a day to take the fish to be weighed, “it could have easily been five pounds.” Right after being weighed, Chasin’ Tails sent Logan straight over to see the NC Division of Fisheries, who certified the record-breaking catch.
One of the most interesting facts about white grunts is where a white grunt gets its name – white grunts make a grunting noise in their throat when they feel upset or scared. This sound is made by using their pharyngeal teeth and air bladder. White grunts are a species of ray-finned fish native to the western Atlantic Ocean and there are a total of 150 different grunt fishes in the world. However, the question remains – can you eat white grunt? The answer is yes, and the flavor is described as mild but tasty. The white grunt is even featured in a historic Florida dish ‘grits and grunts’, where it is served as a panfish. This dish came about because of the commonality of the white grunt in Florida.

Dutch and U.S. officials will meet in Washington on Friday to discuss potential new controls on exporting semiconductor manufacturing gear to China, with a deal possible by the end of the month, according to two sources familiar with the matter. The Biden administration in October published wide-ranging export controls, including measures tightly restricting Chinese access to U.S. chipmaking technology, as part of an effort to slow Beijing's technological and military advances. The Netherlands is home to ASML Holding, the world's leading maker of lithography equipment, which is critical for making semiconductors.

(Reuters) -Albemarle Corp on Tuesday called for lithium prices to remain high indefinitely in order to help the mining industry develop new sources of the electric vehicle (EV) battery metal and fuel the green energy transition. The push for higher prices by the world's largest lithium producer is likely to exacerbate the growing tension between EV manufacturers and mining companies that supply the materials crucial for the all-electric shift, with high metals prices threatening EV profitability. Garrett Riley to make first public speaking appearance at recruiting ... - TigerNet
Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney shocked the college football world when he hired offensive coordinator Garrett Riley away from TCU earlier this month. Since then, Riley has been on the road with Swinney and the offensive coaches recruiting and checking in on the 2023 signees who will enroll in the summer.
Riley has yet to make a public speaking appearance, but that will change when the Fort Hill Clemson Club holds its Recruiting Wrap-Up on Feb. 1. It's also a chance for fans to get an early look at the mid-year enrollees.
The Club will host the 2023 Recruiting Wrap Up on Wednesday, February 1 at the Poe Indoor Practice Facility, from 5:45 pm until 7:30 pm. Doors will open at 5 pm.
All proceeds go toward need-based scholarships for students in Oconee & Pickens Counties, as well as Pendleton High School. This endowment is over $670,000 now, and the Fort Hill Clemson Club hopes to make it a million by 2025. These scholarships are for students from this area who need help. Not athletes, not IPTAY.
Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney and his coaches will be there to introduce with video footage the latest recruiting class, especially the mid-years. Chick-fil-A provides the food for the evening and there is an online auction with unique Clemson experiences, such as lunch for four with Kathleen Swinney and a tour of the Football Complex (those were the two big-ticket items last year).
General Admission tickets for the 2023 Recruiting Wrap Up are on sale for $60/ticket. Current members will have the opportunity to save $10 on each ticket.
Quick note: Since this event occurs during the NCAA recruiting dead period, no 9th – 12th graders, prep school students, or junior college students may be in attendance. All children over the age of 3 must have their own ticket.
The event is a great chance to listen to the position coaches – quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator Riley, running backs coach CJ Spiller, tight ends coach Kyle Richardson, offensive line coach Thomas Austin, wide receivers coach Tyler Grisham, defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Wes Goodwin, defensive tackles coach Nick Eason, defensive ends coach Lemanski Hall, cornerbacks coach Mike Reed, and safeties coach Mickey Conn – share the inside story of the recruiting class. Listening to Eason is worth the price of admission in itself.
There are always interesting nuggets about the players themselves – in the past we’ve heard about Will Shipley and his penchant for wearing old tennis shoes, we’ve heard about Cade Klubnik and his long love affair with Clemson, and numerous other stories. It’s also a chance to get a look at the uniform numbers for those freshmen, which include Peter Woods, Christopher Vizzina, Vic Burley, TJ Parker, Stephiylan Green, Harris Sewell, Jamal Anderson, Zechariah Owens, Ian Reed, Noble Johnson, Kylen Webb, Khalil Barnes, Dee Crayton, and Shelton Lewis.
You can purchase your tickets here.
More info on the event:
How long will the event last?

Your ticket is transferrable as long as the person is in possession of the email with the ticket or printed ticket from the email.
What are my parking options for the event?
Parking will be directed by event parking attendants and will be in the designated areas around the Poe Indoor Football Facility.
Is the Clear Bag Policy in effect for this event?
Yes, it is. This applies to camera bags.
What's the refund policy if(typeof ez_ad_units != 'undefined')ez_ad_units.push([[300,250],'tigernet_com-leader-1','ezslot_3',609,'0','0']);__ez_fad_position('div-gpt-ad-tigernet_com-leader-1-0');
Sorry, there are no refunds because proceeds from this event help provide academic scholarships for local students to attend Clemson University.
