Potential threat to heart health from extreme weather - Science Daily

An analysis in nearly 2.3 million Europeans has found detrimental associations between cold weather and deaths from heart disease, particularly in poor neighbourhoods. The late-breaking research is presented at ESC Congress 2022.¹ Hot weather was linked with excess deaths from heart disease and stroke in patients with heart conditions.
Study author Professor Stefan Agewall of the University of Oslo, Norway said: "Climate change is leading to a rise in the average global temperature but also extreme cold in some regions. More than 70,000 excess deaths occurred across Europe during the summer of 2003 due to intense heatwaves.² Cold weather also accounts for excess deaths and hospital admissions.^3,4 Previously studies on the cardiovascular effects of heat and cold mainly used aggregated data, such as daily deaths in a city. The EXHAUSTION project used individual data, enabling us to identify vulnerable subgroups for protective interventions, thereby increasing resilience for future weather events."
The analysis included 2.28 million adults from five cohort studies conducted in Italy, Germany, the UK, Norway, and Sweden between 1994 and 2010. The average age ranged from 49.7 years to 71.7 years and the proportion of women ranged from 36.0% to 54.5%. Participants with and without cardiovascular disease at baseline were included. Data on mortality and new-onset disease were collected through death and disease registries and follow up surveys. Daily average air temperatures at participants' home addresses were collected from local weather stations or estimated using modelling of temperature data from weather stations
The relationships between temperature and cardiovascular conditions and death were analysed for all participants and in subgroups with particular characteristics. A time-stratified case-crossover study design was used where for each participant, the researchers compared the temperature on the day of the week an adverse event occurred (e.g. Monday) with the temperature on the same day of the week without an adverse event (e.g. all remaining Mondays) within the same month. Using within-participant comparisons between days in the same month eliminated the potential confounding effects of participant characteristics and time trends.
The analysis found increased risks of death from cardiovascular disease overall and ischaemic heart disease in particular, as well as an elevated risk of new-onset ischaemic heart disease, associated with cold weather. With an approximately 10°C temperature drop, from 5°C to -5°C, there was a 19% greater risk of death from cardiovascular disease (relative risk [RR] 1.19; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.04-1.36) and a 22% elevated likelihood of death from ischaemic heart disease (RR 1.22; 95% CI 1.07-1.38). There was a 4% higher risk of new-onset ischaemic heart disease associated with an approximately 11°C temperature drop, from 2°C to -9°C (RR 1.04; 95% CI: 1.01-1.08).
Professor Agewall said: "The relationships between cold temperatures and deaths were more pronounced in men and people living in neighbourhoods with a low socioeconomic status. The links between cold and new-onset ischaemic heart disease were stronger among women and people older than 65 years."
Heat was not related to detrimental effects in the overall study population. However, temperature rises from 15°C to 24°C were associated with 25% (RR 1.25; 95% CI 1.12-1.39) and 30% (RR 1.30; 95% CI 1.10-1.53) elevated risks of death from cardiovascular disease and stroke, respectively, in people with heart disease at baseline.
Professor Agewall said: "Clinicians can use this information to provide tailored advice to those most at risk of adverse health outcomes during hot and cold days. Patients with heart conditions should stay hydrated in hot weather and adhere to advice from their cardiologist on medication use. We can all check the news for extreme heat and cold alerts and follow safety tips from local authorities."

In Bauhaus decor, nothing is around just to be pretty. If the item doesn't serve a meaningful purpose in your life, it's got to go! Glance around a room and determine which decorative elements or furnishings are unnecessary for your home. Every piece, from the candlestick holder to the armchair, should have a defined function in your life. "Only keep what you really love or actually use on a regular basis." This is a simple and effective way to upgrade your home decor to mimic a Bauhaus vibe.
The concept of filling a house only with those specific items that are useful connects the space (and you) to the basic Bauhaus principles of minimalism and functionality. It's this very concept that separates this design style from all the rest. The ability for decor to be strictly useful in an interior is not something all decorative preferences possess. Stay away from stockpiling vases, trinket dishes, decorative bowls, and other dust-collecting accessories, as this is the opposite concept of the style. The pandemic proved that having access to your source of produce should be as commonplace as having access to clean drinking water. Still, the majority of us rely on grocery stores and delivery apps to get our produce and fresh greenery. While keeping our eyes peeled for buzz words like organic and local harvest is a personal choice, there’s no way of knowing exactly under what conditions and where our produce is harvested. When creating Balance, the team at Designer Dot sought to conceptualize an at-home plant cultivator that’s compact enough to fit into any modern kitchen and inconspicuous in its minimalist design to adapt to any interior design scheme.


The Kefirko makes pickling easy, with a glass bottle that holds your veggies and brine, a weight to keep the veggies completely submerged, and an auto-burping mechanism that allows carbon dioxide to pass through a one-way-valve to release pressure. What’s more, the pickling jar even comes with a daytimer on the top that counts down the number of days you’ve kept your veggies to pickle. The one-of-a-kind fermentation station makes it ridiculously easy to pickle practically anything, from veggies to kimchi, or even some sauerkraut!
The Kefirko fermentation station comes in two sizes, and with an easy-to-use setup that allows even the most amateur pickers to master the art of fermentation. The glass jar acts as an inert container, allowing the brine and veggies to ferment without reacting with the walls of the jar. To make sure the veggies are completely submerged in the brine (any air contact can ruin the pickling process), a spring-loaded glass weight helps press them down, creating a volume of air on the top that can easily be pumped out by pushing a button on the top of the lid. Indianapolis homes for sale: Christel DeHaan real estate property bid - IndyStar

The winning bidder of the massive estate owned by late Indianapolis businesswoman and philanthropist Christel DeHaan is attempting to rezone the palatial property for an opulent interior design gallery, restaurant and showroom operated by upscale home furnishing company RH.  
Attorney Timothy Ochs, a partner at the Indianapolis office of Ice Miller, represents Colorado-based M Development. The development company is partnering with RH, which would operate at the site under a rezoning proposal.
The proposal would open up the property at 4501 N. Michigan Road to the public, Ochs said, adding that new use of the property is intended to be respectful to the area in which the estate is located and the natural setting surrounding it. The estate is located on the former grounds of the Benedictine Monastery of St. Maur and is next to Butler University and Newfields.

Ochs declined to disclose the amount of the winning bid. He said M Development partnered with RH on a similar project on the Gold Coast of Chicago. 
"The seller, which is an entity that Christel DeHaan had set up, actually put the property up for bid," he explained. "They did an RFP (request for proposal) process, and my clients offer was selected as the winning offer." 
The property is currently under contract. The rezoning request is scheduled to be heard before the Metropolitan Development Commission's hearing examiner on May 12. 
"This is a big change so everybody was very interested in what's going on," Ochs said. "It's the type of property though, in and of itself, that brings interests in that regard."
RH representatives met with neighborhood groups and community stakeholders on Monday to go over the details the plans. 
"I certainly hope that they'll support this use because we think it's an ideal use for this property," Ochs said. "This home was built by Christel DeHaan, and she built it for herself in a manner that only someone of her means could build and quite frankly maintain it."
Famously wealthy, DeHaan co-founded the Indiana-based timeshare company Resort Condominiums International and funded global education and anti-poverty initiatives.
She died in June 2020.
The private estate was put on the market in January and listed on Encore Sotheby's International Realty for $14 million. The estate spans more than 150 acres. 
DeHaan's mansion spreads approximately 42,000 square feet. It has 7 bedrooms, 10 full baths and 7 half baths, along with an indoor pool, a spa and outdoor pool, tennis court and billiards room.
The home also features gourmet and catering kitchens, cathedral ceilings and a butler's pantry. There's also a private lake as well as outdoor terraces and courtyards.
"This is, frankly, a spectacular setting," Ochs said. "It's kicked out even a notch above what you probably see online."
An RH restaurant would be installed inside the existing home on the estate, he said. The rest of the home will be filled with furniture and paintings and similar items from RH. The company will run design consultancies and services that run out of the out of the home.
"The furniture at the house is for display only," Ochs said. "When someone orders furniture, it's coming from a distribution facility for RH that's separate and apart from the home. The home isn't even used for that."

He added that everything in the showroom will be swapped out about twice a year to provide a new experience for visitors. 
"The rezoning has been filed. The intent is to make it clear that there are no new improvements being built on to the property at all. There's just going to be some remodeling inside for the restaurant. No new structures," he said. "The intent is to keep and maintain all of the existing landscaping and keep all the natural areas natural."
Long concealed by high walls, under the new ownership the property would be open to the public during business hours.
"People could come there. They'll be they'll be security present 24/7. It'll be open for business and people who come there. It's just like any other facility in this regard. You come and stroll around the house and look at how it's been decorated and furnished."
