Lawn Mower Service

[ad_1]

Reasons you should complete your lawn mower service

The maintenance on lawn mowers, especially push mowers is very simple. The average home DIY type person can easily handle their own lawn mower service. With a few simple tools, and a little bit of elbow grease, you to can handle the upkeep on your mower. The first place to look would be your owner's manual. If you don't have one, you should contact the manufacturer of your mower. This will list all the service intervals of various items on your mower.

There are many reasons to maintain your mower.

Longevity - You wouldn't drive your car without changing the oil would you? Then why would you neglect your lawn mower? When you keep up on the maintenance on your lawn mower, you lower the overall cost of ownership. Your mower will last you many years if properly taken care of.

Quality - When your mower is completely serviced, it will perform at its peak. This means engine running in top shape, and also your blade(s) are sharp and balanced. The end result is a mower that will start reliably, cut clean, and always be ready when you are.

Common Tasks during a lawn mower service

Basic maintenance goes a long way, and is simple. Most jobs can be completed at the end of the cutting season before winter storage, or can be completed right before season begins. These common items include the following.

Air Filter

Oil

Spark Plug

Sharpen and/or replace blades

Cleaning under the deck

Air Filter

Typical lawn mower air filter.

As cheap as they are, air filters should just be done once a year. Most lawn mowers have easy access to the air filter housing. Either unlock a couple tabs, or loosen a couple screws. Air filters for lawn mowers are usually the soft foam type, or paper type. If you allow your mowers air filter to become clogged, it will lose power and not burn the fuel completely. See you owners manual for the correct filter.

Oil

Oil catch pan

At least once per year you should change your engine oil on your lawn mower. This will usually require you to tip your lawn mower up on its side, and drain through the fill port as most don't have drain plugs. Many lawn mowers will run SAE 30, but there should be a chart comparing your climate temperature to recommended oil use. Simply unscrew the fill plug, tip the mower on its side and drain all the oil into an approved container. When your container is full you can bring it to a local garage or recycling center for disposal.

Oil Chart

Oil chart for recommended oil weight for climate. Consult owners manual for your specific engine.

The type of oil you use will change some, depending on your local climate. Most all manufacturers have a chart in the owner's manual showing temperature ranges.

Spark Plug

All small push lawn mowers have a single spark plug. The job of the spark plug is to ignite the gasoline to supply power to turn the blade. Overtime this spark plug may become dirty, or fouled. When this occurs your mower will either not start, or will run rough and not perform well. To change a spark plug you will need a spark plug socket. Spark plug sockets have a special rubber insert inside them to protect the ceramic of the spark plug, and also grip and hold it in place.

Once your spark plug is removed you will see what model number it is, by looking on the side of the ceramic. You should be able to see a number, usually in blue colored writing. This will tell which spark plug to replace. Install the new plug, and snug down.

Lawn Mower Blade

When the lawn mower blade is sharp, it will make for a cleaner cut obviously. But this also helps the grass grow better by actually cutting it and not ripping it. When you look at a blade of grass on the tip you should see a nice, clean cut. If its ragged and torn, it means you need to sharpen your blade.

Having a sharp blade also requires less work on the engine. This over the long term will result in longer engine life, as it is not loaded all the time.

Sharpening your blades at home is something a DIY person can do. At the minimum it requires a file, and would make it much easier with a vise to hold it securely while you will work.

Another option is also a grinder, which is much faster, but not everyone has a grinder at their home.

Newer styles of sharpening are using a blade sharpener. These work much like a knife sharpener found in your kitchen, but scaled larger for lawn mower blades.

Sharpening is pretty straight forward. But first we must remove the blade.

Removing a lawn mower blade

Securely raise the mower, so you can access the underside where the blade is located. If you do tip it on the side, drain as much of the gas as possible, and also put the muffler of the engine pointing up. This will keep the oil from running into the muffler, and causing quite the smoke show on startup.

Remove spark plug wire just as a precaution to accidental startup.

Using your blade holder, secure the blade from rotating. This tool is a life saver compared to using a block of wood.

Using a breaker bar and correct size socket, loosen center retaining bolt.

Remove blade.

This is also a good time to remove any grass buildup from under your deck.

Sharpening and Balancing

Now that you have your blade removed, its time to sharpen. Now considering you haven't hit any rocks or other solid objects you shouldn't have any major chips in the blade. If you do, just buy a new set of blades and install.

Hold your blade either securely in a vise, or you could hold by hand. It's important to wear gloves! This will keep your fingers intact. Using a blade sharpener, run from center to tip until a nice sharp edge is formed. Repeat on the other side.

Now we must make sure your blade is balanced. Using a blade balancer, set your blade on it and make sure it is setting level. If one side seems to dip more than the other, take more material off.

The purpose of balancing is to reduce vibration. It's the same concept as balancing your car tires.

When complete install blade back on your lawn mower. Installation is reverse of removal.

Final thoughts on lawn mower service

Doing your own lawn mower service is something just about anyone can do. This is a job that you should complete once a year, and is fairly low cost. Once you purchase all the tools you need, maintenance on your mower will cost next to nothing.

Completing your own lawn mower service is rewarding as you know the job will be done right. It will also save you money over and over again.

Enjoy your lawn mower service, and Happy Cutting!

Email: press@usda.gov WASHINGTON, Jan. 18, 2023 — Today, the USDA National Organic Program (NOP) previewed the Strengthening Organic Enforcement (SOE) final rule. This update to the USDA organic regulations strengthens oversight and enforcement of the production, handling, and sale of organic products. This final rule implements 2018 Farm Bill mandates, responds to industry requests for updates to the USDA organic regulations, and addresses National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) recommendations. “Protecting and growing the organic sector and the trusted USDA organic seal is a key part of the USDA Food Systems Transformation initiative,” said Under Secretary for Marketing and Regulatory Programs Jenny Lester Moffitt. “The Strengthening Organic Enforcement rule is the biggest update to the organic regulations since the original Act in 1990, providing a significant increase in oversight and enforcement authority to reinforce the trust of consumers, farmers, and those transitioning to organic production. This success is another demonstration that USDA fully stands behind the organic brand.” What does the rule do? SOE protects organic integrity and bolsters farmer and consumer confidence in the USDA organic seal by supporting strong organic control systems, improving farm to market traceability, increasing import oversight authority, and providing robust enforcement of the organic regulations. Key updates include: SOE complements and supports the many actions that USDA takes to protect the organic label, including the registration of the USDA organic seal trademark with the USPTO. The registered trademark provides authority to deter uncertified entities from falsely using the seal, which together with this new rule provides additional layers of protection to the USDA organic seal. Who is affected? The rule may affect USDA-accredited certifying agents; organic inspectors; certified organic operations; operations considering organic certification; businesses that import or trade organic products; and retailers that sell organic products. To see if you are affected by SOE, please read the full rule available at: www.federalregister.gov/public-inspection/2023-00702/national-organic-program-strengthening-organic-enforcement When must organic operations comply with the rule? Organic operations, certifying agents, and other organic stakeholders affected by the rule will have one year from the effective date of the rule to comply with the changes. Small Business Venture Capital Strategies

[ad_1] When launching a new small business, often the entrepreneur will consider venture capital as a source of funding. Here are 3 tips to ensure that venture capital funding can be secured when sending out your business plan:
  1. Send your business plan to the right people
  2. Venture capitalists tend to specialize in certain kinds of businesses. Some will specialize by industry, only investing in new energy companies, for instance, while others look for a certain size of company to invest in. It is worth doing the research to determine who the venture capital backers are for your industry, before you start sending out your business plan. Venture capitalists who are not specific to your industry can provide recommendations to make your plan more appealing to other venture capitalists. However, it would naturally be a mistake to send your plan to potential investors who will not even consider it.
  3. Make sure your business has the potential to be profitable enough
  4. Most venture capitalists look for a return of about 5-10 times their initial investment. For example, an investment in a company of $2 million should yield a return of $14-20 million after about five years. To satisfy these requirements, it is generally necessary to have a business which has the potential for a high rate of return on the amount invested. If the rate of return can reasonably be expected to be lower, such as for a clothing retailer, then it is probably better to look for an alternate source of funding, such as an investment or commercial bank.
  5. Remember to include an exit strategy for your investor
  6. Venture capitalists generally do not want to be involved with a new venture for an indefinite period of time. Most will plan to leave the new venture after about five years, so you should offer a clear explanation of how this may be achieved. There can be a variety of reasons for this; some venture capital managers require that the holdings periodically be sold off to acquire other offerings. Nonetheless, by demonstrating that you understand the limited time frame for many venture capitalists, you automatically make your plan more appealing than those which do not.
In summary, by sending your business plan to the right people, by recognizing what rate of return is necessary for venture capitalist involvement, and by including an exit strategy, you can improve your odds of securing venture capital funding for a new and growing business. Your Business Idea Is Worthless Until You Validate It - Forbes

Grass Colors and What They Mean

[ad_1]

Everyone knows that grass is green, but did you know that your lawn can change its color slightly throughout the year? The color of grass depends on the environmental conditions - how much sun and rain it gets and what the soil is like. Most subtle color changes are harmless, but if your lawn seems to be changing color drastically it could be a sign of an underlying problem. Below are some colors your grass may go, and what they all mean.

Dark Green

Dark green grass is a sign that it's producing lots of chlorophyll - this is a sign of a healthy plant. It's got enough nutrition to produce chlorophyll and thrive. Your grass may turn a darker green during the spring and summer when it has lots of sun, especially if you've fertilized during the spring. Make sure your lawn has enough water and you should have a lush green garden all summer long.

Yellowish

Yellowish grass isn't producing much chlorophyll because it isn't getting enough of the right nutrients from the soil. You may need to use a fertilizer to get the green color back. The best time to fertilize is during the spring and autumn, as this gives the grass time to take on nutrients before its main growing and 'sleeping' phases. If the fertilizer doesn't work your grass may have a disease.

Red

A red tinge to your grass could mean several things. Sometimes it's just a sign that the grass isn't producing a lot of chlorophyll. If your grass turns red during autumn and winter, wait for the warm weather to come round again because this might cure the problem. Some grasses, like Ryegrass, have a natural reddish hue so check what species your plant is. Red can also be a sign that the plant is under stress - this could be because of environmental conditions, or it could be because of disease.

Orange

Orange color is normally produced by fungi that live on the grass plant. Rust disease for example leaves orange-colored spores that come off if you rub the grass between your fingers. They're harmful and can kill the grass, but they usually don't kill the whole thing off. If you do have rust disease you'll need to treat your lawn to minimize damage.

Tan color

By the time your grass goes tan it's most certainly dead. Tan grass has been scorched and dried out in the sun, shriveled due to lack of water, or mown too harshly and succumbed to damage. If you've looked after your lawn and it's still dead it's probably been a victim of disease.

You should always try to make sure your grass has a healthy growing environment, as this may halt or reverse the color-changes you see. Make sure your lawn gets enough water and nutrients and ensure that you mow correctly. A stressed lawn is prone to weaknesses and this is when negative (although reversible) changes can occur. If nothing works then you should assume your lawn has a disease and look into that instead.

Trimming The Tag End Of A Fishing Knot - How Short To Cut It

[ad_1]

In fishing, as in life, there are consequences to your actions. If you are constantly finding that your fishing knots are coming undone, then you may be causing that to happen by cutting the tag end of your fishing knot too short. How short should it be? That's exactly what you're going to discover in this article.

Let's back up a little bit and first give some definitions.

When tying a fishing knot, the "Main Line" is the end of the line that connects to your fishing reel. So this is the bulk of your fishing line. You obviously don't cut this end of the line, or you will have cut the knot you just tied clean off your line.

The "Tag End" is the short end of the fishing line that is left over after you tie a knot.

Now you could just leave the tag end as long as it is after you tie your knot and forget about trimming it altogether to avoid mistakes. But unfortunately a tag end that is too long can cause a whole new set of problems. The extra line gives your knot additional weight, as well as cause unnecessary drag in the water that can alert fish to your presence.

So as you can see, leaving the tag end untrimmed is not recommended.

My suggestion then for the tag end goes back to the basic principles of tying a fishing knot:

Tie your knot with the correct number of wraps required for the type and weight of fishing line that you are using.

Ensure that you lubricate the knot well prior to tightening it down. Using soap, rather than saliva is recommended, as it will not eat away at your line. You should keep a small squeeze bottle of dish soap in your tackle box for this purpose.

Tighten your knot properly. Using a small pair of pliers can help you tighten the knot evenly and securely. I keep a pair on a retractable cord on my fishing vest for this very purpose.

If you tighten your knot securely it will not slip and you can leave a short tag. A tag end of 1/16" to 1/8" on a securely tied knot is sufficient.

So as you can see, you may in fact have an issue with your knot tying technique, rather than the length of your tag end, that is causing your knots to come undone. Tighten it down properly and your fishing knots will never slip again.

Mystery in Miami - Fantasy Island Season 2 Episode 4 - TV Fanatic

Ruby and Roarke meet at the dock. Roarke has plans for a special dinner with Javier. Nora (Maxwell Reid), Judy (Whitfield), and Marsha Butler) are friends from Minnesota. They’ve been good friends for over fifty years. They are on the Island for a fourth friend who went missing. While Ruby gets them settled, Javier lets Elena know that he’s had to change his plans in order to take Helene to the mainland for a shopping trip. Ruby sounds a bit envious of the trip. The friends tell Elena and Ruby about their friend, Rosemarie. With her, they were the Fearsome Foursome back in the 80s. Their fantasy is to learn what happened to her. Their fantasy begins by transporting them to 1980s Miami. They change into appropriate clothes for the era, find their car, and discover a map with a marked destination waiting for them. They embark on their adventure. Ruby’s sitting alone when Elena finds her and Ruby asks if she would be able to leave the Island the way Helene does. Elena confirms her understanding that if she left the Island, she’d die the way she would’ve if she’d left with Mel after their trip there. The trio arrive at the address on the map and spot a condo with gardenias planted out front. Nora is determined to knock on the door and find Rosemarie. As they leave the car, a man in a pink leisure suit, reading a newspaper, watches them go. When they arrive at the condo’s door, it’s been broken into. They peek inside and find what looks like blood and a broken vase. They search the condo for clues. Roarke brings Ruby to the ladies’ fantasy portal. She explains that the guests’ fantasies provide a loophole to not being able to leave the Island. She gives Ruby some money and a room key and tells her to take a little holiday in 1980s Miami. In the condo, the women discover Rosemarie had been running a real estate scam. Marsha notices the man in pink walking around their car out front. She also notices that he’s carrying a gun. When she tries to warn the others, they’ve redialed Rosemarie’s phone and discovered that she’d been in touch with Marsha back in the 80s. She distracts them with the danger of the man in pink. They try to sneak past him in the lobby but he spots them and chases them. They speed away in the car but he pursues them. Ruby joins a crowd of rave party goers. When they’re able to pull to the side of the road, Nora and Judy demand Marsha explain the call. She does, but they’re dissatisfied with the explanation. Nora accuses Marsha of being bossy and unable to enforce boundaries with her grown children who still live with her and Judy of being ineffectual. Judy pushes back, telling Nora her life is boring. Segundo finds Elena drinking wine by herself. He points out that she’s changing and letting people in, like Javier and Ruby. With both of them away, she’s feeling lonely for the first time in a while. The women bicker until they find themselves at Ruby’s dance party. Ruby tries to smooth things over for them. She suddenly realizes something about being in Miami in 1985 and leaves, extorting a promise from the trio that they’ll stick together. They immediately become separate when a crowd of people pushes past them to the dance floor. They each spot Rosemarie in the crowd and follow her through a door. Individually, they enter her kitchen. She offers each of them pastries – the ensaimadas she’s always loved, – commenting that she’s been waiting. Judy demands to know where Rosemarie has been and hugs her. Judy accuses her of abandoning her. Rosemarie hands her a plate, stating that she understands that Judy is angry but it’s not her she’s angry at. When Judy asks what the plate is for, Rosemarie smashes one and tells her she’s going to need it. Marsha apologizes for not trying to help when Rosemarie phoned her. Rosemarie reassures her that she has nothing to feel guilty about whether it’s about Rosemarie or her kids. Rosemarie makes some coffee. Nora tells Rosemarie that she doesn’t blame her for living the criminal life. Nora feels boring compared to Rosemarie. Rosemarie asks if she’s just bored. Nora confides that Rosemarie’s disappearance was the most exciting event in her life. In Judy’s scene, Rosemarie gives her plates one at a time to smash as she works through her anger and grief at her husband’s death. In Marsha’s scene, Rosemarie points out that despite being divorced over twenty years, she still feels guilty towards her kids for leaving their father. Rosemarie reassures her that she made the right choice and needs to let go of her guilt and start setting boundaries for her kids. Nora confides that she hates her husband’s dream retirement, playing golf all day. In the aftermath of the dish smashing, Judy has a pastry and recalls that Rosemarie had broken up with a man named Bill just before she moved to Minnesota. Rosemarie says he wasn’t one of the good ones. Rosemarie reminds Nora that she introduced Rosemarie to the ensaimada pastries she loves so much. Marsha recalls that Rosemarie found the best Filipino bakery in Minnesota. Rosemarie comments that she went so often, she made friends with the baker. Rosemarie says it’s time for her to go, that “he” is looking for her. As the three women follow her out of her kitchen, they all find themselves back in their hotel suite. Elena greets them and unpacks some of what they’ve learned about themselves and Rosemarie. Nora organizes them to create an evidence board to solve the Rosemarie mystery. Ruby’s raver friend asks who she’s waiting for. She tells him about Isla, and then lets him know that there’s going to be a surprise appearance by Prince, playing a private set in the tiny room after his stadium concert. Prince walks in just then. As Nora’s returning to the room with supplies, the man in pink yells at her. She runs into their room. He follows, reaching into his coat for something. Judy clocks him over the head with a bottle. He falls down but isn’t knocked out. He pulls out FBI ID. He’s after Rosemarie’s ex, Bill. Nora insists that they cut her a deal so she can help put Bill away and stop running. He points out that Rosemarie’s still running so he can’t cut her a deal. Nora has an idea where they can find her. Segundo checks in with Elena to see how Ruby’s holiday went. Elena confides that she and Javier have been growing apart because she’s been giving him space to get to know Helene. Segundo advises that she be honest with Javier about her feelings. Elena picks up Ruby in the morning. Ruby is charged up from her night in Miami and eager to get home. She is determined to see Isla. The trio finds the best ensaimada baker in Miami. They reassure her that they are just trying to help Rosemarie too why she unconvincingly denies seeing her. They give her an envelope to pass onto Rosemarie when she sees her again. She agrees. The women are transported back to the Island and Elena. They protest that they don’t know how things turned out for Rosemarie. The real Rosemarie, now also in her seventies, appears and tells them that she got the message they left for her. Ruby walks the beach looking for Isla, calling her name. Isla appears, impressed by how vibrant Ruby looks. Ruby kisses her. She tells Isla she experienced real human connectedness magic in Miami and wants more of that to sustain her vibrancy if she’s going to spend the rest of her life on Fantasy Island. They kiss some more. The four friends sit down to catch up. Elena informs them they have lots of time. They are all invited to spend the rest of the week on the Island. Rosemarie explains she changed her name after testifying at Bill’s trial, became a physical therapist, got married, and had kids (and grandkids). Marsha invites her to come stay with her in Minnesota where she’ll have lots of room because she’s kicking her kids out. Nora informs them that she’s starting a murder mystery dinner party business. Judy invites them all to a memorial service she’s planning for Hank. Elena’s arranged a tour of the Island for the women, guided by Segundo, who has been missing spending time with people his own age. Elena finds Javier waiting for her when she returns to her room. She tells him she missed him and asks him if it’s okay for her to start to get to know Helene as well. He’s happy she wants to.   Hey, look at us. Charlie’s Aging Angels. Ruby: Seeing Helene come and go as she pleases… I can’t do that, can I? Roarke: No. Ruby: Because I’ll die. Roarke: Yeah. Ruby: That’s what I thought. Roake: I’m sorry, Ruby. It’s the price of living here. Of living.
