Cancun Travel Advisory: State Department Issues Warning to US Travelers Heading to Mexico - The Points Guy

The U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Mexico have issued a new warning to visitors of Cancun and the Mexican state of Quintana Roo over a potential conflict between taxi drivers and ride-hailing service companies. Medallion taxi drivers have been attacking ride-hailing service drivers as they battle over lucrative tourist rides. Unfortunately, passengers have been caught in the middle. "Official complaints against Uber and other drivers do occur ... and past disputes between these services and local taxi unions have occasionally turned violent, resulting in injuries to U.S. citizens in some instances," the warning reads. On Monday, taxi drivers blocked Kukulcán Boulevard — one of the main roads to the hotel district in Cancun — forcing some passengers to walk or even get police escorts. Taxi drivers are reportedly furious over a court ruling earlier this month that allows Uber to operate in Quintana Roo without a public transport license. In 2021, the Mexican Supreme Court ruled that Uber is not a public transportation company, so it doesn't have to comply with the same regulations as taxi drivers. This infuriated taxi drivers, who face higher costs because they are considered public transportation. Several social media videos show confrontations between taxi drivers and ride-hailing service drivers and their passengers. It's not the first time this kind of transportation competition has led to protests. In 2016, there were nationwide strikes in France by taxi unions over the entry of app-based ride services into the market. Those protests turned violent and effectively shut down Paris. More recently, taxi protests against ride-hailing services like Uber shut down parts of Barcelona. There have also been large-scale protests against app-based, ride-hailing companies in Belgium, Italy, and several U.S. cities, including Denver. If you are headed to tourist areas of Mexico, there are other options to get around. The Cancun Sun has some good suggestions. For example, if you are looking to get around inside the tourist zone in Cancun, there are cheap buses and shuttles. If you're heading to the Hotel Zone, you can book a private car or van via Expedia or Viator for as little as $30. While it can sometimes be a little pricier, you can also communicate directly with your hotel for the best transportation suggestions at this time. The State Department had already issued a travel advisory for Mexico based on crime. "In light of widely publicized security incidents in popular tourist destinations, please remember that all destinations have some level of risk," the advisory reads. It also suggests visitors review personal security plans, be aware of their surroundings, pay attention to local media and immediately call Mexican 911 in case of any issues. The Quintana Roo Tourism Board also has a "Guest Assist App" for free download. The app supplies safety information, legal advice, a complaint line, COVID-19 information and access to a 24/7 bilingual call center for visitor assistance. Couple Restore 100 Year Old Home Into a Dream House - DenGarden

It has a coat of fresh white paint on the outside, black trimmed farmhouse windows, their front door is painted black, the kitchen looks like one out of a fairytale with textured wallpaper, chunky wooden shelves, large reclaimed wood stools, and a porcelain farmhouse sink. You might do bodyweight-only workouts, or the workout might require only basic fitness gear essentials, like an exercise mat, resistance bands or a set of adjustable dumbbells. Although bodyweight workouts are often a great starting place for beginners, if you plan to do at-home workouts regularly, it’s often a good idea to invest in a few pieces of exercise equipment like a set of resistance bands or adjustable dumbbells. Depending on your primary fitness goals, space and budget, having a cardio exercise machine can also be extremely beneficial—as it will permit at-home cardio workouts—but it’s certainly not required. Most workout apps have plenty of workouts that require no equipment, focusing instead on heart-pumping cardio exercises such as jumping jacks and burpees. If you plan to exercise at the gym, choosing a gym workout app will allow you to make better use of all the available exercise equipment, such as weight machines, full sets of dumbbells, suspension trainers, medicine balls, cable machines, barbells, squat racks and kettlebells. Beginner gym workout apps help familiarize yourself with the exercise equipment and will help you safely progress your strength training workouts as you build fitness. One of the benefits of using a gym workout app for beginners is that the app can help get you started with a sustainable workout routine at the gym that you can continue on even if you choose to stop subscribing to the app. Essentially, you can use the fitness app as a virtual personal trainer to teach you an exercise routine you can readily replicate on your own once you feel confident with the equipment and how to structure effective workouts. The best workout apps for beginners provide plenty of instruction so that you know how to properly perform each movement. The quality of the trainers or coaches matters. The instructors should have certifications and qualifications, and should take the time to explain or demonstrate movements during the workout class and provide form cues while you are supposed to be following along doing the exercise at home as you use the app. It’s also important to consider what type of coaching style suits you best. Finding a good match between the coaching style and your personality type can make you more motivated to work out and may improve your exercise adherence, enjoyment and how much you learn about not only exercise, but yourself as a person in your fitness journey. As with any type of app, the features and functions of a workout app determine its value, use ability and appropriateness for your fitness goals and needs. Some basic workout apps are not much more than a digital fitness log that will automatically track your workouts if you are using a compatible fitness tracker, such as an Apple Watch or Fitbit, or holding your smartphone with the GPS engaged while you run outdoors. More comprehensive fitness or weight loss apps provide on-demand or even live workout classes that you can stream from your own home or at the gym. You can typically sort the library of on-demand exercises classes based on the length of the workout, your fitness level, the type of exercise (for example treadmill running, indoor cycling, bootcamp, HIIT, yoga, barre, boxing, Pilates or strength training), required equipment to perform the exercises in the workout and sometimes even the type of music or the instructor who will lead the workout class. Being able to sort and choose exercise classes from a large catalog of options will not only help you find classes that interest you and are suitable for your experience level, but will also help prevent needing to repeat the same classes over and over simply due to a lack of options. The more variety you can add into your fitness routine, in terms of the types of exercise you perform and the intensity level in which you move your body, the more well-rounded your fitness level will be. Finally, some workout apps have additional features such as guided meditations, meal planning sections, a workout planner to schedule classes to increase accountability, workout plans targeted to specific goals (weight loss, building muscle, reducing stress etc.), push notifications to remind you about your upcoming workouts or to move your body after a period of extended inactivity and educational sections. Some fitness apps also have social support with active online communities where you can connect with other app users to share tips, ask questions, build a support system and share achievements. There are also fitness apps that allow you to use your own playlists. Depending on your experience level and the amount of guidance you are seeking in your fitness and health journey, these types of specialized features may be more or less important to you. The cost for workout apps runs the gamut from completely free workout apps to premium workout apps with high monthly membership fees. As with most things, you typically get what you pay for when it comes to fitness apps. Although there are plenty of good free workout apps, most are fairly simple, and may only record workout metrics or will be ad-sponsored, so you will constantly be having to close out pop-ups during your workout. Free workout apps typically do not have much in the way of an extensive library of on demand workout classes that you can stream, workout builder tools that help you design a fitness plan or instructional guidance to help beginners learn how to properly perform exercises. Premium workout apps can be costly, but are still typically a good value, especially when you consider the cost savings for using an at-home workout app instead of buying a gym membership or using a gym workout app instead of paying for a personal trainer. Some premium workout apps offer both on demand and live workout classes. If you like the extra motivation and accountability of being in a live setting, it’s often worth it to pay more for the fitness apps that offer this feature. Some also provide nutritional guidance and/or meal tracking. These can be a good option if you’re trying to lose weight. Most premium fitness apps offer a free trial, which may be anywhere from seven to 30 days so that you can test out the workout classes and familiarize yourself with the features and interface of the app to make sure it is a good fit for you. Take advantage of free trials. Like trying on new clothes, a workout app free trial will help you get a sense of whether the style of the workout classes is what you’re looking for and if you like how the app works in general. Some of the best workout apps may cost upwards of $15-$30 per month, depending on the functions and features offered by the app. You can often save some money by buying an annual fitness app subscription rather than paying on a month to month basis. However, beginners are encouraged to test out the app, at least through a free trial if not a whole month, before paying for an annual subscription to help ensure that it is the best workout app for your needs. In our own process of choosing the best workout apps for beginners, we considered all of the above mentioned important factors that impact the effectiveness and value of any fitness app. One of the primary characteristics we focused on was the quality of the workout classes offered and the instructional and motivational support provided for beginners. We considered the intended audience for the app—beginners, advanced athletes, people looking for a holistic approach to health, yoga classes etc.— to ensure that it was one of the best workout apps for beginners. Within that, we considered the range of workouts provided, the quality of the instructors, the other features of the app such as weight loss support or fitness tips and user reviews. Our goal was to find workout apps for beginners that fit different common niches, such as the need for a good free workout app, workouts for busy folks and workouts for beginners who prefer to exercise outdoors. Finally, we considered the cost of the app and weighed the price and subscription fees relative to the functions provided by the app to assess whether the workout app was a good value. There is no “right” or “wrong” amount of time to work out as a beginner. The intensity of your workout will significantly affect how long you should (and can!) work out. For example, if you are doing low-intensity exercise like walking or yoga, your workouts can be much longer than if you’re doing vigorous exercise like running, high-intensity interval training or strength training with heavy weights. In general, it’s best to start with shorter, more gentle workouts and then you can gradually increase the duration and intensity as your fitness and strength improve. Even just 10 minutes per day can be a great start for beginners. As your endurance improves, you can extend your workouts to 20-30 minutes or more, depending on the type of exercise you are doing and how many times per week you are working out. A workout routine that involves working out at home every day for 30 minutes can be a fantastic way to improve your health and reduce your risk of lifestyle diseases such as heart disease, hypertension, obesity, type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome. To reduce your risk of such diseases, the American College of Sports Medicine and the British Heart Foundation recommend getting 150 minutes of moderate-intensity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic exercise per week. If your home workout routine involves working out for 30 minutes a day five days per week, you can meet these physical activity guidelines. There are other physical and mental health benefits you may also enjoy from daily 30 minute home workouts, such as weight management, improved cardiovascular fitness, greater muscular strength, decreased stress and better sleep. According to the National Center for Health Research if you’re new to working out or haven’t been very active, it’s a good idea to start exercising at a low intensity, then slowly increase the amount and intensity of exercise each week. Starting your exercise routine off slowly, but consistently can help reduce the risk of injury or burnout. It’s recommended that adults get 150 minutes of physical activity each week, which can be split up into 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week or even smaller chunks of time. Overall, there are tons of fitness apps to choose from, some of which are geared towards specific types of exercise like yoga or running while others take a more comprehensive approach and offer all different types of exercise and styles of workouts. Choosing the best workout apps involves considering your fitness level, the type of exercise support you are looking for (live or on-demand workout classes, workout tracking, motivation, social support etc.), your available time to work out, where you plan to work out and your budget. Beach Volleyball Digest: The $800,000 World Tour Finals weekend ... - Volleyball Magazine

We have an Alix Klineman update, sort of, but first … It wasn’t difficult to see why Kelly Cheng and Sara Hughes, and Sophie Bukovec and Sarah Pavan, immediately took to social media to celebrate what was then the best of Christmas presents: Wild cards into the season-ending Volleyball World Pro Beach Tour Finals in Doha, Qatar. They were given an opportunity to play in one of the most exclusive events on the Beach Pro Tour calendar, with just a 10-team field and four guaranteed matches. They were gifted the perfect tune-up for the onset of Olympic qualifying, which begins the weekend following World Tour Finals, ironing out any kinks in their new chemistry in a risk-free setting — there are no points on the line, and therefore no points to lose, in the World Tour Finals. They were also, of course, given the shot to compete for $150,000. That’s not the total purse, nor is that a typo: $150,000 is the prize given to the gold medalists this weekend in Doha. Prize money has been a common gripe amongst players on the Beach Pro Tour. But that will not be a gripe this weekend, where 20 teams will compete for a grand total of $800,000 in prize money. Even the teams finishing last will pocket nearly $8,000, roughly the equivalent of winning a silver medal in a Challenge, as Italians and men’s wild cards Adrian Carambula and Alex Ranghieri did in Torquay, Australia in November. “This is the culmination of an incredibly competitive year on the sand around the world and one look at the teams involved shows just how exciting and competitive the first ever Beach Pro Tour Finals is going to be,” Volleyball World CEO Finn Taylor said. “With Olympic champions, world champions, in-form teams and new and returning partnerships taking to the sand, we have an event that promises to be packed with intriguing stories from the best teams in the world. “We are looking forward to receiving a wonderful welcome from our hosts at the magnificent Aspire Park in Doha, and are grateful to our partners at the Qatar Volleyball Association and Aspire Zone.” Cheng and Hughes, and Kristen Nuss and Taryn Kloth, are the only Americans in the field. Doha will provide the first look at the new team of Pavan and Bukovec, who formed after Melissa Humana-Paredes and Brandie Wilkerson, both former partners of Pavan and Bukovec, became a team. You can watch all of the matches on Volleyball TV.  Alix Klineman announced some big news earlier on Monday morning. Far too big for a simple Beach Digest item. We’ll have a full story soon. The field for the season-opening Doha Elite 16, which follows the World Tour Finals and begins February 1, is constantly shifting. Americans Trevor Crabb and Theo Brunner, who were seeded fourth in the qualifier, and Betsi Flint and Julia Scoles, who were directly into the main draw, have both dropped out of the Elite 16. This made for some excellent news for Tim Brewster and Kyle Friend, who slipped into the qualifier and are now seeded No. 15, in front of Canadians Jake MacNeil and Alex Russell. Friend is racking up the frequent flier miles early in 2023, as he only just returned from the King of the Court in Doha, where he finished fifth with Troy Field, barely one week ago. Little else has changed on the women’s side, where Savvy Simo and Toni Rodriguez are still No. 2 on the reserve list. There are few sports where the cliche of “if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em” has more relevance than in beach volleyball. Paul Lotman has taken the saying to heart, joining forces with Silila Tucker, the 2022 Eric Zaun Award winner and a defender who had beaten Lotman in their previous three meetings. Lotman enjoyed a breakout year in 2022, winning his first AVP, in Atlanta with Miles Partain, and then nearly won the season-ending Phoenix Gold Series Championship. He received a last-minute call from Taylor Crabb to compete in back-to-back Challenge events in Dubai in the fall, and after finishing fifth and third, respectively, he added another top-five with a fourth in the Torquay Elite 16 with Miles Evans. All of those finishes vaulted Lotman, who led the AVP in total blocks in 2022 — earning the nickname Paul Blockman — onto the USA National Team, where he’ll use those points to carry Tucker into Challenge events to begin the season. Tucker had a bit of a breakthrough himself in 2022, quadrupling his previous high in prize money, winning the Laguna Open with Andy Benesh, where he beat Lotman and Troy Field in the finals. A week ago, it was Idaho who was adding beach volleyball. Now the Sun Belt has grabbed onto the fastest-growing sport in NCAA history, adding beach volleyball as its 19th sponsored sport. Four Sun Belt Conference institutions currently sponsor Beach Volleyball — Coastal Carolina, Georgia State, ULM and Southern Miss. In addition, the Sun Belt will welcome affiliate members College of Charleston, Mercer, Stephen F. Austin and UNCW to form the eight-team league. Georgia State is a two-time NCAA Championship participant (2016, 2022) and advanced to the round of six last season. “We are pleased and excited to welcome Beach Volleyball as our 19th championship sport,” Sun Belt commissioner Keith Gill said. “As the fastest growing collegiate sport, particularly within the footprint of the Sun Belt, it is a perfect fit for our conference. We’re looking forward to providing an elite competitive and championship environment for the student-athletes, coaches and fans of Sun Belt Beach Volleyball.” The Swoosh will now be a regular feature in American beach volleyball. Kelly Cheng and Sarah Hughes, the No. 1 team in the USA, have both inked contracts with the sporting-goods giant. Hughes has been a longtime Nike athlete, signing almost immediately after graduating from USC, while Cheng was briefly with Adidas during her run with Sarah Sponcil.  This past September, the brotherly duo of Taylor and Brenden Sander drew no small amount of eyeballs when they teamed to take a fifth at the Laguna Open, upending a number of accomplished AVP players in the process — Seain Cook and David Lee, Evan Cory and Logan Webber, to name a few. With Brenden, the younger of the two, putting in regular time with the USA Volleyball developmental group, many wondered if he would be transferring to the beach, as older brother Taylor did. Not yet. Last week, Brenden, a former standout at BYU, signed with Panathinaikos Athens to play outside hitter. I made a deal with LT Treumann, a proud father and an excellent beach volleyball coach who oversees B Volley in St. Petersburg, Florida: When his daughter, Thais, won an open, with a solid field consisting of professionals, then, and only then, would she get a write-up. That day came on Saturday, when Treumann, an eighth grader at the age of 14 years and one month, and Lydia Smith, won a SSOVA event, beating Aurora Davis and Bree Scarbrough in the finals. The field included USC recruit Ashley Pater and UCLA recruit Kennedy Coakley, who finished third, as did Violet Slabakova and Regan McGuire. Treumann, it should be noted, has received interest, according to her father, from all of the aforementioned schools, among several others. Treumann, however, is not the youngest to win an open. Sarah Wood, a 14-year-old from Glen Mills, Pennsylvania, is the youngest I could find. She won an open at Highline Arena in New Jersey on December 19, 2020 — when she was just 12 years and seven months. Earlier this year, Wood became the youngest player to qualify for an AVP, when she and Ashley McGinn qualified for the Muskegon Tour Series when Wood was just 14 years, one month and 16 days.
