Organic grower plans urban farm development on Milwaukee's south side - Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

A five-story urban farm development featuring an organic growing operation and other uses could be coming to Milwaukee's south side. Beyond Organic Corp. is proposing the 85,000-square-foot building at 716 W. Windlake Ave., just south of West Historic Mitchell Street. That's according to a new Common Council filing. Beyond Organic is seeking an exclusive right to negotiate a possible purchase of the city-owned parking lot. That right would run through Nov. 30 if approved by the council. That would give the non-profit corporation "time to secure financing and further develop the organization’s business plan and site concept," according to the filing. The proposed urban farm project would feature a mix of uses including retail, dining, event space, education/classroom space, aquaponics and vegetable cultivation, it said. During the “exclusive right” period, the Department of City Development would work with Beyond Organic to refine its site and building elevations, budget and financing strategy, and development plans. The filing shows the development with such features as a "planted roof," roof patio and planter beds. The council resolution accompanying the filing describes the proposed development as "an indoor vertical farm." Aquaponics is a recirculating urban faming system. It uses fish waste to help fertilize produce, with the produce helping to filter the water used to raise the fish. Laura Michele, of Beyond Organic, wasn't immediately available to provide more information about the proposal.
