Mystery in Miami - Fantasy Island Season 2 Episode 4 - TV Fanatic

Ruby and Roarke meet at the dock. Roarke has plans for a special dinner with Javier. Nora (Maxwell Reid), Judy (Whitfield), and Marsha Butler) are friends from Minnesota. They’ve been good friends for over fifty years. They are on the Island for a fourth friend who went missing. While Ruby gets them settled, Javier lets Elena know that he’s had to change his plans in order to take Helene to the mainland for a shopping trip. Ruby sounds a bit envious of the trip. The friends tell Elena and Ruby about their friend, Rosemarie. With her, they were the Fearsome Foursome back in the 80s. Their fantasy is to learn what happened to her. Their fantasy begins by transporting them to 1980s Miami. They change into appropriate clothes for the era, find their car, and discover a map with a marked destination waiting for them. They embark on their adventure. Ruby’s sitting alone when Elena finds her and Ruby asks if she would be able to leave the Island the way Helene does. Elena confirms her understanding that if she left the Island, she’d die the way she would’ve if she’d left with Mel after their trip there. The trio arrive at the address on the map and spot a condo with gardenias planted out front. Nora is determined to knock on the door and find Rosemarie. As they leave the car, a man in a pink leisure suit, reading a newspaper, watches them go. When they arrive at the condo’s door, it’s been broken into. They peek inside and find what looks like blood and a broken vase. They search the condo for clues. Roarke brings Ruby to the ladies’ fantasy portal. She explains that the guests’ fantasies provide a loophole to not being able to leave the Island. She gives Ruby some money and a room key and tells her to take a little holiday in 1980s Miami. In the condo, the women discover Rosemarie had been running a real estate scam. Marsha notices the man in pink walking around their car out front. She also notices that he’s carrying a gun. When she tries to warn the others, they’ve redialed Rosemarie’s phone and discovered that she’d been in touch with Marsha back in the 80s. She distracts them with the danger of the man in pink. They try to sneak past him in the lobby but he spots them and chases them. They speed away in the car but he pursues them. Ruby joins a crowd of rave party goers. When they’re able to pull to the side of the road, Nora and Judy demand Marsha explain the call. She does, but they’re dissatisfied with the explanation. Nora accuses Marsha of being bossy and unable to enforce boundaries with her grown children who still live with her and Judy of being ineffectual. Judy pushes back, telling Nora her life is boring. Segundo finds Elena drinking wine by herself. He points out that she’s changing and letting people in, like Javier and Ruby. With both of them away, she’s feeling lonely for the first time in a while. The women bicker until they find themselves at Ruby’s dance party. Ruby tries to smooth things over for them. She suddenly realizes something about being in Miami in 1985 and leaves, extorting a promise from the trio that they’ll stick together. They immediately become separate when a crowd of people pushes past them to the dance floor. They each spot Rosemarie in the crowd and follow her through a door. Individually, they enter her kitchen. She offers each of them pastries – the ensaimadas she’s always loved, – commenting that she’s been waiting. Judy demands to know where Rosemarie has been and hugs her. Judy accuses her of abandoning her. Rosemarie hands her a plate, stating that she understands that Judy is angry but it’s not her she’s angry at. When Judy asks what the plate is for, Rosemarie smashes one and tells her she’s going to need it. Marsha apologizes for not trying to help when Rosemarie phoned her. Rosemarie reassures her that she has nothing to feel guilty about whether it’s about Rosemarie or her kids. Rosemarie makes some coffee. Nora tells Rosemarie that she doesn’t blame her for living the criminal life. Nora feels boring compared to Rosemarie. Rosemarie asks if she’s just bored. Nora confides that Rosemarie’s disappearance was the most exciting event in her life. In Judy’s scene, Rosemarie gives her plates one at a time to smash as she works through her anger and grief at her husband’s death. In Marsha’s scene, Rosemarie points out that despite being divorced over twenty years, she still feels guilty towards her kids for leaving their father. Rosemarie reassures her that she made the right choice and needs to let go of her guilt and start setting boundaries for her kids. Nora confides that she hates her husband’s dream retirement, playing golf all day. In the aftermath of the dish smashing, Judy has a pastry and recalls that Rosemarie had broken up with a man named Bill just before she moved to Minnesota. Rosemarie says he wasn’t one of the good ones. Rosemarie reminds Nora that she introduced Rosemarie to the ensaimada pastries she loves so much. Marsha recalls that Rosemarie found the best Filipino bakery in Minnesota. Rosemarie comments that she went so often, she made friends with the baker. Rosemarie says it’s time for her to go, that “he” is looking for her. As the three women follow her out of her kitchen, they all find themselves back in their hotel suite. Elena greets them and unpacks some of what they’ve learned about themselves and Rosemarie. Nora organizes them to create an evidence board to solve the Rosemarie mystery. Ruby’s raver friend asks who she’s waiting for. She tells him about Isla, and then lets him know that there’s going to be a surprise appearance by Prince, playing a private set in the tiny room after his stadium concert. Prince walks in just then. As Nora’s returning to the room with supplies, the man in pink yells at her. She runs into their room. He follows, reaching into his coat for something. Judy clocks him over the head with a bottle. He falls down but isn’t knocked out. He pulls out FBI ID. He’s after Rosemarie’s ex, Bill. Nora insists that they cut her a deal so she can help put Bill away and stop running. He points out that Rosemarie’s still running so he can’t cut her a deal. Nora has an idea where they can find her. Segundo checks in with Elena to see how Ruby’s holiday went. Elena confides that she and Javier have been growing apart because she’s been giving him space to get to know Helene. Segundo advises that she be honest with Javier about her feelings. Elena picks up Ruby in the morning. Ruby is charged up from her night in Miami and eager to get home. She is determined to see Isla. The trio finds the best ensaimada baker in Miami. They reassure her that they are just trying to help Rosemarie too why she unconvincingly denies seeing her. They give her an envelope to pass onto Rosemarie when she sees her again. She agrees. The women are transported back to the Island and Elena. They protest that they don’t know how things turned out for Rosemarie. The real Rosemarie, now also in her seventies, appears and tells them that she got the message they left for her. Ruby walks the beach looking for Isla, calling her name. Isla appears, impressed by how vibrant Ruby looks. Ruby kisses her. She tells Isla she experienced real human connectedness magic in Miami and wants more of that to sustain her vibrancy if she’s going to spend the rest of her life on Fantasy Island. They kiss some more. The four friends sit down to catch up. Elena informs them they have lots of time. They are all invited to spend the rest of the week on the Island. Rosemarie explains she changed her name after testifying at Bill’s trial, became a physical therapist, got married, and had kids (and grandkids). Marsha invites her to come stay with her in Minnesota where she’ll have lots of room because she’s kicking her kids out. Nora informs them that she’s starting a murder mystery dinner party business. Judy invites them all to a memorial service she’s planning for Hank. Elena’s arranged a tour of the Island for the women, guided by Segundo, who has been missing spending time with people his own age. Elena finds Javier waiting for her when she returns to her room. She tells him she missed him and asks him if it’s okay for her to start to get to know Helene as well. He’s happy she wants to.   Hey, look at us. Charlie’s Aging Angels. Ruby: Seeing Helene come and go as she pleases… I can’t do that, can I? Roarke: No. Ruby: Because I’ll die. Roarke: Yeah. Ruby: That’s what I thought. Roake: I’m sorry, Ruby. It’s the price of living here. Of living. Kanye West's Antisemitism Might Stop Him From Getting Australian ... - The Daily Beast

SEARCH PATTERN OF BEHAVIOR? ‘LOGIC OF WAR’ ‘THAT IS VERY DIFFERENT’ ‘JUST A TRAGEDY’ STAY INDOORS RISKY BUSINESS ‘GRATEFUL’ BRING IN THE BIG GUNS BAD RECORD News Correspondent Kanye “Ye” West might not be able to get a visa to enter Australia because of his slew of antisemitic outbursts, the country’s education minister suggested. The fallen artist had reportedly been planning to travel Down Under to meet the relatives of his new Australian partner, Bianca Censori, but his outspoken “love” for Nazis and admiration for Adolf Hitler might pose a problem for his travel plans. “I don’t know if he’s applied for a visa yet—but Google it, you will see that he seems like he’s a pretty big fan of a person who killed six million Jewish people last century,” Australian Education Minister Jason Clare told Channel Nine. “People like that who’ve applied for visas to get into Australia in the past have been rejected. I expect that if he does apply, he would have to go through the same process and answer the same questions that they did.” source https://4awesome.streamstorecloud.com/kanye-wests-antisemitism-might-stop-him-from-getting-australian-the-daily-beast/?feed_id=37825&_unique_id=64aef6c112872

Financial technology founder Zach Conway '10 applies big-picture ... - Gettysburg College

Gettysburg College Gettysburg College Gettysburg College Gettysburg College Home Academics Campus Life Athletics Admissions & Aid For Zach Conway ’10, wealth goes beyond monetary value—it’s about relationships. At Gettysburg College, relationships connected him with a dynamic community of students and faculty who broadened his perspectives on a wide range of topics. Now as a wealth advisor and founder of a financial technology company, relationships are also the foundation for connecting people with advice that can help them align portfolios with personal values. Conway has spent more than a decade of his career working in wealth management, an avocation shaped by his Gettysburg education. Although he knew he wanted to graduate with an economics degree, Conway said he always maintained a passion for writing, an activity he enjoyed throughout childhood. He didn’t think about a writing minor until he met former Gettysburg College English Prof. Steve Gehrke, who saw his potential as a writer and encouraged him to cultivate it. “As much as I knew I wanted and did enjoy my economics classes, my favorite classes were my writing courses,” he said. “I think having that educational foundation for writing has benefited me significantly in my career.” Upon graduating from Gettysburg College, Conway worked as an editorial manager for Standard & Poor’s, a credit agency that publishes financial research and analysis on stocks and bonds. He later joined his family’s business, Conway Wealth Group, as managing director. For more than 40 years, Conway’s father Michael has managed this private wealth advisory firm based in Parsippany, New Jersey, as its founder. It was through his work at the firm that Conway shared knowledge and resources about managing wealth with his clients. The writing and communication experience he gained at Gettysburg College then opened doors for Conway in financial industry media outlets. His bylined articles began in 2015 and have included placements in Barrons, Investment News, The Wall Street Journal, and wealthmanagement.com. He began contributing to Forbes in March 2017. Conway’s writing focuses on advising his readers to view wealth not as a desired outcome of success but as a tool that can allow us to pursue happiness beyond money. Through his research on wealth management, Conway said that looking at the bigger picture—a skill he gained at Gettysburg—enabled him to identify a gap in the industry: discrepancies in the relationship between financial advisors and investor clients. In 2019, Conway founded Seeds Investor to help fill that void and deliver a purposeful, personalized, and engaging experience with investing. His latest endeavor focuses on that bigger picture, too. “Our platform enables investors to better understand what they own and ensure portfolios align personal values with financial goals,” he explained. “The bigger picture mission of Seeds is to have investors feel reconnected with their money and understand what it’s doing in the world. It’s a lofty mission—moving trillions of dollars of investor assets into things that better align with what’s important to them.” Leading a startup requires having a diverse skill set, Conway added. From writing communications to customers and colleagues to problem-solving a complex issue within their product, he credits the liberal arts and sciences education at Gettysburg for his growth across disciplines and for helping him advance and succeed in his career. “Gettysburg is a place that encourages bigger picture thinking,” he said. “For me, that bigger picture thinking manifested in me wanting to be an entrepreneur, having control of my destiny. Exposure to the liberal arts is such a great proxy for the world, life, and your career. You get a broad exposure to people and ideas, and this exposure continues with your life in the real world.” Explore the value of a liberal arts and sciences education at Gettysburg College. Kendall Jenner ripped for ‘overlined’ lips and ‘unflattering shoes’ as star flaunts pin-thin figure in sexy... - The US Sun

KENDALL Jenner has been ripped for "overlining her lips" and wearing "unflattering shoes" as the model flaunted her figure in a silk gown. The Hulu star donned the curve-hugging dress while attending the Atlantis The Royal hotel's "Grand Reveal Weekend." Kendall, 27, was photographed on the luxury Dubai hotel's blue carpet in the Schiaparelli "chain-link halter gown." Several snapshots were posted on a Kardashian-dedicated Reddit board where fans could weigh in on the reality TV star's chosen look. The TV personality's umber-colored dress with its gold accents garnered plenty of praise from fans. One person commented: "I love the dress. Interesting without being too extra." Another fan questioned: "Is this dress a Schiaparelli?" before adding, "She always looks good in that designer." Kendall's choice of makeup, on the other hand, received negative feedback from fans. One critic wrote: "She has got to stop overlining her lips." A second commenter mentioned: "It looks like she maybe got her lips done recently in addition to overlining." While a third person stated: "No one gets away with over-lining their lips. It looks like a muddy mess. Period." The Keeping Up With the Kardashians alum's shoes also didn't receive much favor from Redditors as one user commented: "I despise those shoes. Heeled flip-flops." "The shoes are so unflattering," added a second with a third writing, "came here to slander the shoes too." A fourth person wrote: "They look like beach flip flops and why doesn't she have a pedicure?" Another commented: "I HATE high heeled flip flops so I totally hate the shoes also lol" While a final commenter summed up the opinions of most of the critics, stating: "Love the dress. But unfortunately, I’ll have to deduct points for the makeup and shoes." Recently, Kardashian fans spotted an odd detail in Kendall's new photos after the former E! star uploaded a series of Instagram photos in which she stunned in a green dress. The Kardashians star completed the fancy look with her shoulder-length black gloves and knee-high boots. The Victoria's Secret model parted her dark hair in the middle and tied the rest into a bun.  In the comments, fashion critics were not thrilled with Kendall's glamorous look as they claimed she photoshopped "her tiny waist and arms." One critic said: "I strongly dislike that pose. She always looks so creepy when she takes a photo like that." Another critic added: "The photoshopped waist is killing me." A third critic mentioned: "She looks like a sad grasshopper with tiny arms." A fourth person wrote: "Why she gotta pose like that with her tiny arms? It reminds me of some sort of insect." A commentator chimed in: "That pose is all wrong. It's giving garden gecko vibes." Recently, the brunette beauty donned the same green dress when he partied in Dubai on January 20th.  On Friday, the supermodel attended the grand opening of the new hotel Atlantis The Royal. Kendall's very own 818 tequila brand was popular among guests at the hotel opening. The model later shared a video of a bartender pouring liquor into the tequila shots on the tray.  She also reshared a photo taken by her long-time family friend Simon Huck, who is also sister Kourtney Kardashian's business partner for her Lemme brand. In the snapshot, the LA native was lying down on a large sun lounger and clutching a big bottle of 818. 10+ Gut-Healthy One-Pot Dinner Recipes - EatingWell

Make dinner tonight easy by trying one of these one-pot recipes. With ingredients like asparagus, onions, beans and legumes, these dishes are packed with prebiotic fiber that can help support gut health, healthy digestion and healthy immune function. Recipes like our Creamy Mushroom, Chicken & Asparagus Bake and Hearty Chickpea & Spinach Stew are healthy, tasty and call for a quick cleanup. Make a double batch of this quick vegetarian chili, full of black beans and sweet potatoes, and eat it for lunch the next day or freeze the extras for another night. We love the smoky heat from the ground chipotle, but omit it if you prefer a mild chili. Serve with tortilla chips or cornbread and coleslaw.   This comforting weeknight casserole recipe features plenty of mushrooms and asparagus combined with chicken and brown rice and a creamy Parmesan cheese sauce. Whip this up anytime you have leftover chicken or cooked brown rice to spare.   This satisfying stew comes together in a snap. Mashed chickpeas add body to the broth, and tomato paste adds a savory note without piling on the sodium in this healthy recipe for weight loss.   One sheet pan is all you'll need to whip up this zesty chicken fajita recipe. They're quick and easy to make and cleanup is even faster!   Frittatas are a versatile dish that can be served at breakfast, lunch or dinner. This easy frittata, featuring green spring vegetables accented by chopped tomatoes and parmesan cheese, can be on your plate in just 25 minutes.   Made with convenient canned beans, this quick and healthy Indian recipe is an authentic chickpea curry that you can make in minutes. If you want an additional vegetable, stir in some roasted cauliflower florets. Serve with brown basmati rice or warm naan.   Chock-full of quinoa, chickpeas and vegetables, this salad is a meal in itself. The roasted red peppers, lemon, olives and feta add texture and flavor to this Mediterranean diet recipe.   Simmer eggs in a rich tomatoey cream sauce studded with chickpeas and silky spinach for a super-fast vegetarian dinner. Serve with a piece of crusty bread to soak up the sauce. Be sure to use heavy cream; a lower-fat option might curdle when mixed with acidic tomatoes.   A pound of dried beans is the inexpensive foundation for this simple, hearty meal. Serve it with slices of whole-wheat bread or a side salad for a complete and satisfying lunch or dinner.   This Greek-inspired chicken and vegetable sheet-pan meal is bursting with flavor. The chicken is coated in a mayonnaise and bread crumb mixture, roasted alongside asparagus, cremini mushrooms and grape tomatoes and then served with a lemon-feta vinaigrette.   This healthy chicken pesto pasta recipe is easy to make thanks to convenience ingredients like rotisserie chicken and store-bought pesto. The addition of fresh asparagus brightens up the look and flavors of this easy one-pot dinner. Fresh basil, if you have it on hand, is a nice finishing touch.   Simple brown rice and black beans serve as the backdrop for sautéed veggies and taco toppings!   To make this 20-minute vegan curry even faster, buy precut veggies from the salad bar at the grocery store. To make it a full, satisfying dinner, serve over cooked brown rice. When shopping for simmer sauce, look for one with 400 mg of sodium or less and check the ingredient list for cream or fish sauce if you want to keep this vegan. If you like a spicy kick, add a few dashes of your favorite hot sauce at the end.   French green lentils and black lentils hold up well to long, slow cooking without becoming mushy. Save the rinds from used-up blocks of Parmesan in a resealable plastic bag or tightly sealed container in the refrigerator. They give soup broths a rich, savory flavor.   source https://4awesome.streamstorecloud.com/10-gut-healthy-one-pot-dinner-recipes-eatingwell/?feed_id=37747&_unique_id=64a9adc7a6c05

10 tasty heirloom seed varieties to include in your garden this year - The Washington Post

Sign in An earlier version of this story incorrectly implied that home gardeners can purchase seeds for genetically modified organism (GMO) vegetable varieties. The story has been updated. Is your garden planning limited to browsing the seed packets on the rotating display by the checkout at the hardware store? Or simply flipping through a few big-box gardening catalogues to order whatever looks good for your growing zone? If that’s the case, you’re probably purchasing mostly hybrid varieties. It might be worth rethinking your approach to your plot and planting heirloom fruits and vegetables instead. Usually at least 50 years old, these long-loved varieties offer multiple benefits, and they don’t require special equipment or growing conditions to flourish. “Mainstream varieties are bred for durability, long shelf life or appearance,” says Mike Bollinger, executive director of the Seed Savers Exchange, a nonprofit organization based in Decorah, Iowa, that collects, catalogues and distributes heirloom seeds. “On the other hand, a lot of heirloom varieties were bred with canning, fresh eating and flavor in mind.” In other words: They can taste better. Another advantage to heirloom seeds is they are open-pollinated (naturally pollinated by the wind, bees, birds or other animals), meaning they grow “true to type” year after year. So, unlike with some hybrid varieties, if you harvest seeds from heirloom produce, you can grow the same crop in future seasons. Yes, that’s right: seasons, plural. Yes, it's January. But if you want a robust spring garden, start your seed-shopping now. “Seed-catalogue villains have convinced us that we have to buy seeds every year,” says Ellen Ecker Ogden, kitchen garden designer and author of “The New Heirloom Garden: Designs, Recipes, and Heirloom Plants for Cooks Who Love to Garden.” “But if you store them properly, they keep for years.” To properly preserve seeds, Ogden places each variety in a separate Mason jar with a desiccant pack to eradicate moisture. She stores them in a cool, dry place that doesn’t receive any sun. (A closet, a kitchen cupboard away from the stove or a basement with low humidity are all great options.) A seed’s lifespan depends on the variety, but some can survive five years or longer if properly stockpiled. Perhaps an even deeper value to heirloom varieties is their genetic diversity. “These are unusual times in terms of climate and rainfall,” says Ira Wallace, a worker/owner of the cooperatively managed Southern Exposure Seed Exchange in Mineral, Va., which distributes heirloom and organic seeds. “The genomes of heirloom varieties are more elastic, since they haven’t been bred so finely. So, when a new challenge comes along, there might be a resistance to it in an heirloom variety.” On top of all that, heirlooms can be eye-catching head-turners, defying expectations when it comes to coloration and hue. Tomatoes don’t need to be red, carrots aren’t always orange, and cucumbers can be more than basic green. Your spring planting schedule Here are 10 heirloom varieties that will transform your garden beds — and meals — into deliciously gorgeous riots of color. “They have always been fascinating,” Ogden says, “because they don’t look like tomatoes.” When ripe, the sweet yet tangy medium-size fruit (perfect for BLTs) takes on a chartreuse tone with streaks of light lime, mossy green and yolky orange running down the sides. With beautiful purple veins running through their fan-like leaves, these collards make an impression. Wallace also appreciates their compact build, making them well-suited to raised beds, and that the leaves cook quickly compared with other hearty greens. Although these regal-looking root vegetables have a reddish-purple exterior, their insides are classic orange. “They’re very sweet but almost spicy, too,” Bollinger says, making them great for snacking, steaming and roasting. Popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the spherical, sunny-hued cuke is enjoying a resurgence in popularity. “It’s a fun one, because kids love them,” says Ogden, who notes that they don’t taste like lemon but that they have a boldly sweet flavor that works well in salads and pickled preparations. Streaked with vibrant purple, these smaller teardrop-shaped eggplants with thin skin can be slipped into ratatouille, lasagna or moussaka. “They’re compact plants, so they do well in tighter spaces and in pots,” Bollinger says. “And they produce heavily, so you don’t need a lot of them.” Growing to more than three feet tall, this ornamental brassica features a tuft of purple leaves at the center with a ring of green ones on the outside. A favorite of Bollinger’s, it can be prepared similarly to kale or collards. The golden-orange chiles are not for the faint of heart, packing as much punch as habaneros. That makes them great for hot sauces. “Once you get past the heat, there’s a nice citrusy flavor underneath,” Bollinger says. “It looks like a hot pepper, but don’t worry: It’s actually sweet,” Ogden says. The Christmas-red curly Italian chiles are perfect for frying or for adding nice notes to a mild salsa. Pear-shaped with a blazing-orange skin, this winter squash shines in curries and soups. Bollinger appreciates its diminutive size, because it can be grown in smaller gardens. Ogden loves these Northern Italian beans with attractive red-brown mottling, nicknamed the “shrimp bean” thanks to their shape. Simply sauté them in olive oil with thinly sliced garlic to savor their fresh flavor. Nevin Martell is a writer based in Silver Spring, Md. His website is nevinmartell.com. Sierra Starr Fairy Duster, right, a hybrid of the native California species and the Baja species, is hardy to 18 F. It grows into a 4- to 5-foot mound, covered with red flowers that attract hummingbirds. In late fall, shrub abutilon, above, still has an abundance of flowers. The intensely colored golden-orange flowers of Palmer’s Indian Mallow (Abutilon palmeri) are especially attractive to native solitary bees. The bladderpod shrub I can see from my window has had abundant yellow flowers nearly year-round. Other California native plants from chaparral and desert areas can also have a long bloom time. What sets these particular plants apart is that they grow in full sun, need excellent drainage and will thrive in the hottest part of your garden. Desert plants can benefit from the reflected heat of a south- or west-facing wall, an adjacent sidewalk or a big boulder that absorbs and radiates the heat of the day. Using a mineral mulch such as gravel or decomposed granite instead of an organic mulch such as arborist chips can also help these plants to thrive. Apricot Mallow (Sphaeralcea ambigua) comes in shades from the palest salmon to deep red-orange, with flowers from half an inch to 2 inches across. To ensure good drainage, you can plant on a slope or make a mound so that the crown of the plant, where the above-ground stems originate, never sits in a puddle of water. The mound can be 6-12 inches higher than the surrounding soil, at least a foot in diameter and constructed so that the soil surface gently slopes away from the crown of the plant. These plants are generally drought tolerant once they are established and need minimal care. If you’re looking for a challenge, try a couple of stunning frost-sensitive plants from Southern California and Baja. Plant them under the eaves if your garden gets frosty, or cover them if the temperature dips occasionally. The following plants can sustain damage if the mercury falls below 25 F. • Palmer’s Indian Mallow (Abutilon palmeri) has striking golden-orange flowers set off by soft silvery gray leaves. The flowers are larger, deeper and more intensely pigmented than those of California poppies. This is an important plant for native bees. At 3-5 feet tall and wide, the shrub can be covered in blooms from spring to fall. Native to desert scrublands where summer thunderstorms are not uncommon, this plant likes the occasional sprinkle in the summer to wash off the leaves. It may also benefit from some afternoon shade at an especially hot site. In late fall, shrub abutilon, above, still has an abundance of flowers. Its soft silvery-gray to gray-green leaves provide a textural contrast in the dry garden. • Baja Fairy Duster (Calliandra californica) is a hummingbird magnet. Its airy bright-red starbursts are actually inch-long stamens, covering the 3- to 5-foot mounded form for much of the year. The delicate tiny leaves are evergreen. It can be pruned to fit into smaller spaces. • Sierra Starr, a red-flowered hybrid of the Baja Fairy Duster and the native California Fairy Duster (C. eriophylla, which has pink flowers), is hardy to 18 F. Sierra Starr Fairy Duster, right, a hybrid of the native California species and the Baja species, is hardy to 18 F. It grows into a 4- to 5-foot mound, covered with red flowers that attract hummingbirds. • Apricot Mallow (Sphaeralcea ambigua), also known as Desert Globemallow, tolerates a wider range of temperatures, though it is particularly sensitive to wet conditions in the colder months and must have excellent drainage. In the summer, it will thrive in the hottest spot in your garden. It’s approximately 1-2 feet high and a little wider, with flower stalks rising 1-4 feet above the grayish leaves. Native solitary bees and hummingbirds are drawn to the flowers, which vary from half an inch to 2 inches wide and can be pale to deep shades of orange and red-orange. A couple of deep summer waterings can prolong the bloom. To keep the plant lush and longer-lived, trim the flowering stalks back to 3-6 inches in the winter. Although it may not live longer than three to five years if untended, this plant can reseed and is relatively easy to find in nurseries. Tanya Kucak gardens organically. A place for coffee and community - Las Cruces Sun-News

Friday mornings are my favorite mornings of the week. Instead of heading straight to the office, I get to hang out at a coffee shop, Blueberry Café, in the historic downtown section of my hometown. It’s a small place that feels like it belongs just right where it is. For me, it’s more than a hang out, it’s an opportunity to visit with new friends, and see a lot of old ones too. When the owner is running late, dropping off her kids at school or doing other mom things, she knows we have her back. Some time ago, she gave me a key to the place. I felt special until she said others had a key to the place. She’s a trusting person. You have to be that kind of person when you are running a small business while also being a mom and juggling a separate full-time job. We trust her to let us be there on Friday mornings. To turn on the lights and get the coffee pot going. She trusts us too. I never knew how to brew up a latte until she gave me a quick and dirty lesson. She said I should know just in case the place got too busy for her and she needed a helping hand. I’m no barista, but she taught me, and once in a while she needs that helping hand. On Fridays, there are a lot of helping hands. Sometimes they come from the local domestic violence shelter case worker. She’s a Friday regular. When she’s there, she tells of success stories, the ladies who came in without hope and who left with not just hope but a chance for a new beginning. She helped them. There’s a colleague from the college that stops by and shares his homemade burritos. Still warm, they are wrapped in foil, marked “B” for beans and “C” for chorizo. He doesn’t charge us, and everyone expects them. It’s our Friday morning breakfast. He helps us. People come and go on Friday mornings. Business owners, non-profit workers. The tamale lady (she helps me with my cravings), the guys from across the street coming out of the gym for some refueling. They all help in their own way, buying a cup of coffee, sharing hellos and handshakes. I like to have places to go on the same day of the week, at the same time of the day. It makes me feel like I made it to another Friday. Another time for coming together. To see familiar faces and to see new ones too. Every town must have a place like Blueberry Café. A place run by a mom with seemingly endless energy. One of those kinds of places sandwiched between two other small businesses in buildings whose exterior still feels like it was during your grandparent’s generation. The Christmas lights hanging on the awning are always there. The big windows facing the street let you know who is inside and who is outside. The piano in the corner waiting to be played. It’s a place where time is needed. No drive-thru window. You can’t place an order through an app. You have to walk in, say hello, request your latte, and then wait. During that time, you talk to neighbors, you share ideas. You get to know your community. Friday mornings are my favorite mornings of the week.
