Bristol holds tree lighting ceremony - The Bristol Press

@DeanIWright
BRISTOL – For the first time in recent years, Bristol held a tree lighting ceremony Thursday night to open up its holiday season on a hopeful note at Page Park Pool,
Hundreds of visitors along with the families of Bristol police officers shot in October who led the lighting of the display in honor of their sacrifices.
WTIC journalist Brian Shactman emceed the event with the tree donated by an area resident with a farm in Simsbury. Shactman noted one of WTIC’s employees was a Bristol resident and they had wanted to help in putting on something positive for the community after a late tough year. Bristol Parks, Recreation, Youth and Community Services set the tree up on the balcony of the pool area, one of several scheduled holiday festivities.
“It’s exciting and great to see the whole community out here,” said Kristopher Salls who said he had spent weeks putting together lights at the pool in his personal time with help from his wife Ashley Salls.
Mayor Jeff Caggiano honored Kristopher Salls with the Bristol All-Heart Award for his efforts in making the display possible with over 120 inflatables and around 300,000 lights, including the inflatables.
The mayor said he wanted the city to consider the lyrics of the Zac Brown Band song called “The Comeback.” He encouraged visitors to reflect on its messages looking to “hope and the light and the future” and their references to emergency workers and how they could connect with Bristol.
Bristol Police Chief Brian Gould introduced the honorary ceremony tree lighters as members of the DeMonte and Hamzy family, relatives of the deceased Lt. Dustin DeMonte and Sgt. Alex Hamzy who died in an October ambush shooting after responding to a domestic disturbance call. Officer Alec Iurato also responded, was wounded but shot the ambushing gunman. Family members lit the tree in their honor.
“On behalf of the Bristol Police Department, we see you and we care about you,” said the chief to the crowd. “We appreciate you and we cannot thank you enough for all of your love and support. It’s truly remarkable and it’s helping us through some very difficult times. We’re in this together and we’ll get through this together.”
Santa Claus was present to visit with families and Richard Theriault, Bristol Brass and Wind Ensemble maestro and a director for Bristol Chorale, led the singing of Christmas carols.

East Longmeadow PTOs host annual e-cycle fundraiser Sept. 10 - Reminder Publications

Sept. 1, 2022 | Debbie Garner
dgardner@thereminder.com

EAST LONGMEADOW – Got old electronics you want to dispose of? Appliances and yard equipment that you no longer need? TVs left over from your last upgrade? Important papers you need to shred?
The Parent-Teacher Organizations (PTO) of East Longmeadow’s five public schools hope you’ll dispose of these unwanted items with them during their annual fall e-cycle and shred event fundraiser.
On Sept 10 from 9 a.m. to noon, bring your unwanted electronics and appliances – and files – to East Longmeadow High School for proper disposal, for a fee, with all proceeds benefiting the PTOs of the five schools. Electronics recycling – e-cycling – will take place between 9 a.m. and noon; shredding will take place between 10 a.m. and noon. Representatives from all five East Longmeadow schools, as well as Longmeadow High School student volunteers, will be on hand to help unload items from vehicles. The event is rain or shine.
The cost to recycle small electronics such as VCRs and DVD players, appliances such as coffee makers, toasters, and hedge trimmers, and computer items such as laptops, tablets and printers, is $15. Appliances such as air conditioners and humidifiers/dehumidifiers, lawn mowers, computer monitors and TVs up to 19” are $25. All flat screen TVS, as well as other models 20”-27” in size, are $30 to dispose of. Large appliances such as dishwashers, exercise equipment and console/rear-projection and other TVs over 30” are $40. All shredding, which will be processed securely on site by ProShred, is $5 per bag or box. Preferred payment method is Venmo to Mapleshade-PTO; payment also accepted in cash or by checks payable to the Mapleshade PTO the day of the event.
The goal for the annual fundraiser is “between $1,500 and $2,000 … that’s what we usually hope for every year” event coordinator Katie Reilly told Reminder Publishing, with the funds split between the town’s five schools – Mapleshade, Meadow Brook and Mountain View elementary schools, Birchland Park Middle School and East Longmeadow High School – for extras not covered by each school’s budget. At the high school the monies typically help cover “teacher appreciation” events Reilly said, while at the elementary and middle schools the funds are put towards “enhancements of learning materials, field trips … it depends on what the [PTO] board decides and the principals ask for that year.”
This year, Reilly said the Board of Health obtained grant monies which the group is using to defray the cost of the shredding services for the event.
“They are paying $500 for the use of the truck,” which means the payments for all shredding done on Sept. 10 will be “pure profit” for the annual fundraiser, Reilly said. For larger items, especially those with freon, the fundraiser proceeds are the balance after the group pays recycler Gold Circuit e-cycling to dispose of the goods, she added. Regardless, Reilly said the PTOs try to keep the cost of recycling and shredding at this annual event affordable for the public.
She said 100 percent of all proceeds raised during the event goes to the schools.
“We have been holding this event for quite a while,” said Reilly, who indicated the fundraiser predates her involvement, and she has a child who is a senior at Longmeadow High. “But we thought it was a service that is necessary – everyone has bulk items they need to dispose of – and here is a great cause [to support].”

Growing popularity of table tennis and increase in participation in the game globally, rise in awareness about fitness, sports activities and exercise among people due to rise in sports education and sports training in academics, and rise in sport initiatives by governments in emerging economies drive the growth of the global racket sports equipment market.
PORTLAND, Ore. , Aug. 22, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- Allied Market Research published a report, titled, "Racket sports equipment Market by Product Type (Rackets, Balls, Eyewares, Racket Bags, Accessories), by End User (Men, Women, Kids), by Application (Badminton, Racquetball, Squash, Tennis), by Distribution Channel (Hypermarket, Specialty Stores, E-Commerce, Others): Global Opportunity Analysis and Industry Forecast, 2022-2031." According to the report, the global racket sports equipment industry generated $176.80 million in 2021, and is estimated to reach $272.40 million by 2031, witnessing a CAGR of 4.3% from 2022 to 2031. The report offers a detailed analysis of changing market trends, top segments, key investment pockets, value chain, regional landscape, and competitive scenario.
Drivers and Opportunities
Growing popularity of table tennis and increase in participation in the game globally, rise in awareness about fitness, sports activities and exercise among people due to rise in sports education and sports training in academics, and rise in sport initiatives by governments in emerging economies drive the growth of the global racket sports equipment market. However, growing penetration of the internet, smartphones, computers and other electronic media & entertainment devices which lead to an increase in involvement of youth towards indoor activities hamper the market growth. On the other hand, entry of big brands in markets where there is lack of availability of sports facilities and products, setting up of sports facilities, sports centers and play grounds by key players, donation of sports equipment, building sports facilities, conducting free of cost sports competitions, and providing free training to potential athletes by various organizations and NGOs, and the developing interest of the youth in sports are anticipated to offer potential opportunities for the market growth in the coming years.

Covid-19 Scenario
The balls segment to hold the lion's share during the forecast period
Based on product type, the balls segment contributed to the highest market share in 2021, grabbing more than one-fourth of the global racket sports equipment market, and is expected to maintain a noteworthy growth during the forecast period. Increased participation of youth in various racket tournaments, an increase in the number of tennis players all over the world, the rise in tennis competitions, the short replacement cycle of tennis balls which frequently require the purchase of new balls, and the introduction of a variety of slower balls and smaller courts fuel the global tennis ball market. The accessories segment is projected to witness the fastest CAGR of 6.2% from 2022 to 2031. The wristbands market is driven by innovation and the key competitors are developing goods with improved features that are drawing a sizable consumer base to smart wristbands.
The badminton segment to dominate the market during the forecast period
Based on application, the badminton segment was the largest market in 2021, holding more than two-fifths of the global racket sports equipment market share, and is likely to exhibit a prominent growth during the forecast period. This is due to technological advancements in badminton rackets, shoes and shuttlecocks. Badminton trainings are also more intense and some are even supported by sports science. However, the tennis segment is anticipated to manifest the fastest CAGR of 5.4% from 2022 to 2031.
The specialty stores segment to lead the trail during the forecast period
Based on distribution channel, the specialty stores segment held the largest share of more than one-third of the global racket sports equipment market in 2021, and is likely to maintain a noteworthy growth during the forecast period. Specialty stores are popular as any product is easily available there. Manufacturers constantly take efforts to increase the visibility of their products on the shelf and are therefore mainly target such stores. However, the e-commerce segment is anticipated to manifest the fastest CAGR of 5.6% from 2022 to 2031. This is because online sales channels are more preferred by consumers in developed countries due to an increase in adoption of mobile phones and internet penetration.
Asia-Pacific to achieve the fastest growth by 2031
Based on region, North America held the highest share in 2021, accounting for more than one-third of the global racket sports equipment market. However, the Asia-Pacific market is projected to manifest the fastest CAGR of 5.6% during the forecast period. This is due to increase in purchasing power of consumers and rise in the middle-class population in the Asia-Pacific region. Furthermore, rise in marketing initiatives such as heavy marketing campaigns and celebrity endorsements also fuel the growth of the market in the region.

Hawke's Bay man mowing down lawn and garden scamsters - Hawkes Bay Today

Entrepreneurial Napier lawnmower Beau O'Brien's business of cleaning up people's front and back yards has taken another step forward with a plan to help clean up the industry itself.
At it now for 10 years, establishing Bo's Mows, he's launched online site the New Zealand Lawn and Garden Registry, open to all professional services, whether individual, franchiser or franchisee.
It aims at being a first call for anyone looking to get their lawns mowed by creditable and reputable operators, and to exile fly-by-nighters, cold-calling, overcharging, not doing a satisfactory job and customers being bullied.
O'Brien reckons dodgy operators are enabled by a lack of industry standards, particularly on pricing.
The site will provide resources for registered lawn and garden operators, which will help new arrivals in the industry and provide reference for those looking for the services.
The Commerce Commission says that in the last 12 months it has received nine "contacts" relevant to pricing and quality of law, gardening and garden landscaping services but none are currently under investigation.

O'Brien likens his development to more formal industry standard monitoring and promotion groups such as Master Builders, Master Butchers and Baking New Zealand.
He hopes to take the concept nationwide.
O'Brien said there's "no shortage" of mowing and gardening work in Hawke's Bay.
However, a recent check of services advertised as operating in Hawke's Bay revealed as many as half with contact details out-of-date or no longer in use, or businesses themselves no longer operating.
"It's incredible," said O'Brien, who has never been shy of encouraging and supporting others into the industry, even prospective competition.
He says that by "working together" operators can share work if needed because of the workload, or to have work closer to home.
Police Hawke's Bay area prevention manager Martin James says residents need to exercise caution when engaging workers to carry out maintenance around their homes or property.
"Someone from a legitimate business should have a business card and more often than not, a marked trade vehicle displaying a company name," he said.
"If you are approached at your door or cold-called, we suggest you refrain from engaging someone on the spot, and instead take their business card or details, and research the business they purport to represent before you go any further."
He said people should also refrain from letting door-knockers enter their homes, ensure any work is done upfront before payment and not give out bank account or credit card details to strangers.
Anyone who believes they may have been the victim of a crime should always contact police.

10 Most Dangerous Jobs in America - Worldatlas.com

If the worst part about your job is that it is boring or uneventful, you are actually one of the lucky ones. While there is plenty of work out there that requires more hands-on skills and experience, not all jobs are desirable because of the risks associated with them.
Fishing and hunting top the list of most dangerous jobs in the US because of the number of fatalities associated with them. Fishing, in particular, brings humans in contact with the harshest elements of mother nature. Drowning causes a lot of deaths, as does managing heavy machinery, and being exposed to bitter weather conditions.
According to OSHA, the fatal injury rate for fishing and hunting workers was 132.1 per 100,000 workers in 2020. However, humans must eat, so there is always a need for people to do this job.
Logging has always been on the list of "top ten of most dangerous jobs in the US," and it is easy to see why. Cutting huge trees in forests is a risky business. The tree could fall on the logger if they are not careful, with fatal results. Logger tools are also very dangerous as they are heavy, with plenty of sharp edges.
Logging truck accidents are very common. In 2020, the number of logger fatalities grew from 70 to over 90 per 100,000.
Home construction is a booming business and every house needs a roof. According to OSHA, 47 out of 100,000 roofers were fatally injured in the US in 2020. The work is particularly dangerous because roofers are always at risk to fall, no matter what the weather. They need a lot of equipment to build and repair roofs, and carrying it all with them can also become a safety hazard.
Poorly supported roofs can cause accidents too. A small lapse in concentration, or a sudden fear of heights, anything can lead to a fall, which may prove to be fatal.
Construction jobs are not a walk in the park either. In 2020, the construction industry recorded fatalities numbering over 40 out of 100,000. Most of these were a result of falls at the workplace, electrocution, accidents with heavy machinery, and vehicle collisions near worksites.
Research shows that mental health issues such as depression and stress have also contributed to a higher number of fatalities in recent years. Stress impacts sleeping patterns, and tired workers are more prone to accidents. Some studies also showed that the suicide rate grew significantly in the construction industry during the pandemic.
Not many consider flying to be unsafe nowadays, but being an aircraft pilot or flight engineer is still on the US's most dangerous jobs list. According to OSHA, the fatality rate for pilots and flight engineers in 2020 was 34.3 out of every 100,000 workers.
The majority of accidents took place on private aircraft, while commercial planes and flights remained relatively safe. Bad weather, defective machinery, and human error could have been the cause of these accidents. Safety protocols continually change so that the probability of such mishaps is minimal going forward.
Humans generate a lot of garbage every day, so garbage collectors are an integral part of the US system. Unfortunately, that does not mean their work is not fraught with danger. Working with heavy machinery comes with its own set of hazards and the fact that they have to keep stopping on their routes to collect trash exposes them to the likelihood of injury by another vehicle, or the garbage truck itself.
As is evident from their job title, iron and steel workers are constantly working with heavy machinery. They are cutting, welding, and shaping the metals to use in the construction of bridges, roads, and buildings, and they are working at heights to lift, load, and unload steel. Many have slipped and fallen to their death because of these conditions. OSHA estimated over 32 of every 100,000 iron and steel workers died as a result of workplace accidents in 2020.
Although it is a common profession, being a truck or delivery driver in the US is a dangerous job. Truck drivers spend long hours on the road, maneuvering large vehicles and putting themselves at risk of accidents or crashes with other vehicles. The tediousness of the task can cause driver fatigue and this in turn can lead to accidents with often fatal results. OSHA estimated that over 25 out of 100,000 truck/delivery drivers were fatally injured in 2020.
Mining accidents can happen because workers are working in cramped quarters where cave-ins can trap and fatally injure them. The more common danger of working in a mine though is exposure to methane gas and coal dust. Both of these elements can catch fire and explode, injuring those in the mine. Fatalities can also be a result of machine malfunctions or accidents with other equipment.
Many farmers and agricultural workers face fatal injuries due to pesticide exposure, and air pollution. However, transportation accidents, especially tractor overturns, are the biggest cause of fatalities among farmers and agricultural workers. Over 20 out of 100,000 agricultural workers died in 2020, the majority of whom were a victim of tractor overturns. Studies show that a simple method for dealing with this problem is to equip tractors with a Roll-Over Protective Structure (ROPS) with a seatbelt. Hopefully, once this is more commonplace, the number of fatalities will go down.
This list shows how bad a really "bad day at work" can be for some people. It is imperative that companies and governments enforce policies and procedures that protect workers' rights and prioritize their safety. No one should be in a position where they have to fear for their life because of the job they choose.
